Word comes from West Palm Beach that Bill Oberlink has begun an adventure following a new road. Bill is now the president for the Florida region of Cellular One, and he will be responsible for managing Cellular's statewide operations of this growing industry. Bill is a certified public accountant and had served with Arthur Young & Co. before joining Cellular One. We know Bill is a lover of golf, but we wonder if he has a cellular phone on his golf cart to telephone his clients or to report his sub-par score to the clubhouse.
More telecommunications news informs us that Ron Mario has been named president of COMSAT Mobile Communications. Ron has directed the company through three years of "explosive growth," as it has become one of the corporation's fastest-growing businesses. He has helped to bring "land quality" communications to maritime users and has helped to add aeronautical and international land mobile markets to the business. Prior to joining COMSAT, Ron had 14 years of management experience at the Continental Group Inc. Ron, wife Helaine, and family reside in Potomac, Md.
In my first class notes column, I called upon the troops of the class of'65 to supply ammunition for this space. Ken McGruther heeded the call, responding, "I cannot let a challenge go unanswered. I was supposed to transfer from Naples in january, and had also hoped to be at Pierce's last October. In both cases Saddam Hussein had a different plan that outweighed mine." Ken stayed in Naples until the war was over and then, in March of this year, transferred to the U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs. Ken hopes to be at the mini-reunion this year, and would like to see many of us there. Ken's letter is long enough to fill this column, and you should look for more of it in Bruce Jolly's more detailed communication, the class newsletter. I mail him what I get and he does the same for me. You can do us both a favor by "communicating" with us. Write or phone. Use COMSAT or Cellular One. Just do it.
How about some names? If you did not read Bruce's July newsletter, go back to it to learn about jeff Panitt, Marsh Wallach, Mike Orr, John Daily, Steve Banta, Larry Duffy, Alike Chittick, and a dozen others. If this column is to have any beef in it, we need you to write.
Let's call some doctors. Dr. Dan Alkaitis, do you still live in Connecticut? Dr. KentSalisbury, how is the family? Dr. Jim Roche, tell us about the Blue Devils. Dr. Alan Munro, did you ever hear of Delivery Express? Dr. Dean Mosher, Dr. Jim Little, Dr. BradHawley, Dr. Bill Clack, and all other '65 doctors, what sage advice to you offer your classmates? We are all pushing the half-century mark and could use some health tips. What should we do to enjoy the next 50 years?
If you read this column as soon as you get it, you might not be too late to make a lastminute decision to join the fun at the mini-reunion at Pierce's, October 2 5-27. If you have never been to a mini-reunion, you have no idea what you are missing. If you can't spend the weekend, come up for Saturday only. We '65s gather for a picnic in front of Sphinx for about an hour before the football game. Don't worry about tickets; you can get them at the gate. You are almost 50 years old and the wise strategy is to "punt" at this time. Many of us are hoping for a victory over Cornell and we need you to cheer the team on. Until then, take care of yourself.
