I have before me the Pinecrest Village Post, a slick, four-page, full-colored periodical published by the McInnes's attractive residential community. In it are two good photos of Milt and Blanche looking healthy and happy. This being the spring issue, it precedes Milt's accident. Most recent word from Milt is that he's improving and Blanche is great." I plan to do the October Thirtyteer and Milt expects to take over after that.
Ted Wolf passed on to me an interesting July letter from Sam Stayman now partly retired and handling only family investments. Frankly, I was always amazed that Sam could find time for all the study required to manage a portfolio, but I suppose it's like remembering that someone is still holding that three of spades. Less tournament bridge now, and no more National Championships, but he still plays four or five times a week when they're in Florida and at the Regency Club in New York almost daily. And now more travel. He's taking one or two cruises a year and giving lectures on bridge when they're at sea, which Sam says makes it easier on the pocketbook. That kept them from the mini this year, but maybe next year we'll see them.
Other letters include a fine one from Ginny Chilcote with enclosures about Lee's memorial service, attended by over 800 friends and associates. She wrote a beautiful and touching note about their courtship and marriage and Lee's two-year battle with leukemia. I hadn't known that a month before his death Lee had fallen and fractured his skull. The good news is that Ginny will attend the Woodstock reunion, with her sister, Martha Bradford.
Finally, a note from John Marsh says he hopes I've had a nice cool summer. Well, not bad in Green Valley, but daily during the past month one of the western Arizona towns has registered the nation's high, around 105. But, as John observes, we don't have Florida's humidity, which by August is unbearable. At 5:00 p.m. yesterday ours was 15 percent. One question that always bothers me in Arizona: what should I wear in Woodstock?
