Peregrine falcons were placed on the endangered species list in 1974. The bird, which is the size of a crow, dive-bombs its prey at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and flies from winter quarters in South America, where it is still hunted, to northern U.S. and Canada and as far as Greenland. It has even been introduced to cities to keep the pigeon population down. The bird has taken Bill Mattox on his latest journey down the road less taken.

A geography major at the College, Bill graduated into the Army, studied in Norway, Sweden and Iceland, then took his master's and doctoral degrees at McGill. In 1972 he joined the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, from which he retired last year as assistant chief of the division of water.

He formed his own consulting firm Greenfalk in Worthington, Ohio. Twenty years ago he attached himself as a researcher to the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project. During that time Bill has been reintroducing the falcon to the nooks and crags of Greenland. As a result there are now 800 pairs nesting in 33 sites along the coast with evidence of nesting inland where the bird has never been seen before. When not far away on the job, Bill lectures on the peregrine. Neither he nor the birds do anything by halves.

Headline: "Weidman retires from industry and becomes Chautaugua Town Supervisor." Jim Weidman retired from a long career with Welch Foods (grape juice) a year or so ago, as some may have read here. Learning that the supervisor job would be open, Jim was one of eight who sought it. In spite of his lack of political and elective experience, Jim was picked and is now running a town. His annual salary is $8,OOO. Jim and Ann live in Mayville, where she promotes Chautuagua tourism. Aside from the town job, Jim sits on the County Industrial Development Agency, was president of the hosptial board, and is a director of two chambers of commerce. Doesn't sound like retirement.

Charles Clough recently retired as CEO of Nashua Corp., into the position of board chairman. Charles was with the New Hampshire shire photo finishing and office supply concern for 37 years. Are you moving to Hanover with everyone else?
