By the time you read this, Paul Tsongas may be a fall-fledged candidate for the U.S. presidency in 1992. A former U.S. senator from Massachusetts (1978-1984), Paul had to cut his political career short due a run-in with cancer, which he now has successfully conquered. Most recently he has been practicing law in Boston in addition to being the chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Regents and active in a number of environmental causes. Paul plans to run as a "probusiness liberal" liberal in social issues but favoring some tax incentives for corporations in order to restore the country's economic strength. His new book, entitled "Return To Purpose: Forging a New American Mandate," outlines the major elements of this new thrust to reshape the traditional Democratic approach. If he goes ahead, Paul will enter the Democratic primaries in New Hampshire, lowa, Florida and California. Although Paul would like a new Washington address next year, he and his wife, Niki, and three daughters still live in Lowell, Mass.

In other changes, Chuck Gelman has left the employ of the San Diego Padres (v.p., Communications) and joined Fleichman-Hillard Inc., the nation's largest independent public relations firm. (Too bad your outfit is independent, Chuck .. . I've got this Democrat friend from Massachusetts who...) Chuck is the senior vice president for the company's Los Angeles consumer marketing group. Chuck wants his friends and the rest of our class to know that he had nothing to do with the Roseanne Barr national anthem debacle; that was arranged by the Padres' managing partner (Harvard, of course), and Chuck has a letter, and a new job, to prove it.

Bucking Chuck's directional change is MikeSlive, who moves back into the athletic world as the first commissioner of the newly-formed Great Midwest Conference. Based in Chicago, Mike will oversee the sports efforts of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, the University of Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Memphis State, and St. Louis University (Tsongas take note: nothing in Iowa). Until 1990 Mike had been associated with MikeCoffield (George Washington's mouthpiece).

A quick plug for the Dartmouth Alumni Fund: for those of you who haven't yet picked up your checkbooks, you have until the end of June to contribute to the Big Green. Please help maintain our reputation as a major class player in the growth of Dartmouth.
