By the time you receive this, you will have received a full report from Newsletter Editor Bill Long on our class meeting and mini-reunion held October 23-27. However, here are some of the highlights.
The best part of our mini-reunion was the presentation to the College of some very special flowering trees—our official class gift—in honor of President Emeritus John Kemeny. They were planted just outside Thayer Hall, and the president advised us during his and Mrs. Kemeny's participation in the ceremony that the beautiful view afforded by these trees might be an uplifting event following the students' meals.
Our meeting included 20 classmates and several spouses, and many more joined us as the day progressed. Bill Boyle did a great job of putting together all of the logistics for an eventful three days. It began with our largest attendance in years (40-plus, led by Bob Watson) at the Friday night bonfire on the Green. (Don't let the College halt this great tradition—write to the President and let him know how important the bonfire is to us.)
The next morning our meeting, led by President John Ferries, started at 9:00 a.m. (early!) with Chris Cundy and Charlie Pinkerton oudining our major success with the '91 Alumni Fund. We had a goal of $103,000 and an actual take of $111,000; included in that number were 37 leadership gifts.
Karl Holtzschue reported on the work of the class project committee (Howie Greene, Lee Wilson, Doug Wise, and Karl). He reviewed a long list of possibilities and finally recommended that we sponsor two Presidential scholars, at a total cost of $l,OOO per year, and noted that it would be nice if one were an athlete (Karl reminded us that we had lost the tug-of-war both years). The sponsorship was unanimously supported, and we will be the first class to take on such a project. The Presidential Scholars are currently being supported by outside resources.
The meeting ended with a walk to the South Mass dorm area for President Kemeny's presentation, and this was followed by a great football victory over Cornell. The day ended with a close-knit, energetic cocktail party and dinner at the Lyme Inn, and it included several of our children, as well as local alumni.
Next year, homecoming will be in midOctober, and we are making arrangements for our mini-reunion to be held that weekend. We will be using the Dowd's Inn in Lyme, so please mark your calendars.
