Such a short time since many of us were together at the 5Oth that I think news of who's doing what might be "old hat." So, no personalities this edition. But I do want to tell you a little about us—as a class. First, a final note on the 50th: A total of 387 attended; 195 classmates; 170 wives and friends; eight widows; and 14 children or grandchildren. Simply great! Also, we finished on the plus side of the ledger financially. Again, our thanks to chairperson Jimvon Rohr and all his committee, and most of all thank you all for coming to your Reunion.
From fundraising wizard Tom Adams comes this: final Alumni Fund figure was $901,666.00. Since our goal was $546,000, we set some sort of a record for overriding—I think. Our 80-percent participation is a record for a 50-year class, and our override helped the College reach its goal. You should all be very proud of the class of 1946. Fifty years out is certainly a significant milestone. I think at this time you should know just what our class has done, is doing. I told you previously about our overall fund giving, more than $4 million, but what about year-to-year, our dues? Where do they go? You should know. Back in 1973 we took $16,000-plus from our treasury and set up the memorial book program at Baker Library. The moneys are used to purchase a book for the library in memory of each of our classmates who has
passed away. When I checked the fund at Reunion time we had approximately $52,000.00. Obviously we will not have to add to that.
A few years ago at the urging of our late classmate Duncan Fitchet, we started a book restoration fund at the library. We contribute $2,000.00 to that each year, by a vote at the class meeting at our minireunion. The library is most appreciative of our efforts, it being the only general restoration program they have. We have also voted $1,500.00 a year for the athletic sponsors program. We pay $7,500.00 a year to send out the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine and $1,700.00 for the class newsletter. Miscellaneous expenses are $1,700.00. These are 1996 figures. We have approximately $12,500.00 in our treasury and expect next year's dues to be $12,000.00. Any rumor you may have heard at Reunion about a dues increase was just that. There will be no increase in the $40.00 figure. so there's where your money goes. Not very heady stuff, but it's your money and I wanted you to know how it's used.
Our mini-reunion is October 17-19. John McClintock will get the details to you. There will be a panel discussion on "Dartmouth Directions." This is a followup on the questionnaire that Jim Brod and Jim Shute had asked be sent out earlier this year. The panel will consist of newly appointed Vice President for Alumni Affairs Nelson Armstrong, Walt Snickenberger, either Jim Brod or Jim Shute, and two undergraduates. Try to make the "mini." Hope to see you there.
