At the time of this writing I have just returned to St. Thomas Island from an extended at-sea trip and thus if the text seems a bit shaky it is due to a tremendous "welcome-to-land party." One further comment before going on with my message for this month, and that is, it is sure nice to be down here enjoying the beaches while so many are snowbound 'way up North.

WEDDING BELLS

Marriages and engagements again seem to be on the rise with this month's list quite long. From 'way over in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jon Mandaville writes that he is now engaged to Janet Haskins (sister of George Haskins '54). Jon is presently doing Honours (M.A.) in Turkish, Arabic, and Persian at the University there.

Paul Auvil is another to fall as he became engaged to Carole Ann Koehler of Evanston, Ill., and they are planning a June wedding. Presently Paul is attending Stanford University while Carole is on the teaching staff of the Evanston hospital school of nursing.

Jerry Allyn has taken as his fiancee Frances Anne Werner, and they are planning an early summer wedding. Jerry is currently enrolled in the School of Engineering at Yale while his bride-to-be, a Smith graduate, is also at Yale working for her M.A. degree in Art.

Jim Block is another of this long list in that he and Barbara Heller of New York City are now engaged and are planning a June wedding. Jim is with the Block Drug Company of Jersey City while Barbara is studying at Finch College in New York.

A brand new Navy ensign, Bill Gray, who is currently attending the Navy Combat Information School in Glyncol, Ga, has taken as his bride-to-be Barbara Gregg of Darien, Conn. Again as in most of the above mentioned engagements a summer wedding is planned. Bob Morris and Anne Louise Bowden have announced their engagement but to my knowledge there has been no exact date for the wedding set. Bob is on the staff of the Minneapolis Honeywell Corporation.

Once in a while even the Psi U's break down as is shown by the recent engagement of Pete O'Neill and Mary Leslie Hughes. The future bride is a graduate of Briarcliff College and then received an Associate of Arts' degree from the University of Florence. Pete is presently employed by Alcoa.

Bill Zebedee has found it possible to keep these engagements with the '59 family by becoming engaged to Eleanor Jean Bareuther (sister of Dick Bareuther). Upon graduation from Tuck School in June they plan on being married. Last but not least Nate Oakes and Carolyn Keefe have announced their engagement and are planning an August wedding. Nate is at this time attending the University of Michigan Law School.

Now on to those who have not hesitated and have made the final step: Late but not forgotten is the news of the marriage of John Roberts and Carolyn Campbell. John is presently at Duke graduate school of Zoology where he states he is spending most of his time chasing crayfish and earthworms. December 27 was the glorious day for Dick Pearson and Ann Weeks as they were then married. Dick is now doing graduate work at Northeastern University.

The Daily "D's" own Landon Rowland became a husband on January 16 when he and Sarah Lea Fidler were wed in Wilmington, Del. Landon is now attending Harvard Law school. More old news is the marriage of Art Wolff and Virginia Euwer, a former Smith girl. Jinny has been teaching and Art has been working as a stage manager Off-Broadway while awaiting impending fatherhood.

A fellow Navy man and a next door neighbor in my ship's squadron is a relatively

newly married man, Karl Holtzschue; to Linda Gross. Karl is serving in the operations department of the U.S.S. McCaffery.

First from engagements to marriages and now to a new category - the owners of those little tottering feet; children: Dick Bareuther announced the birth of a little, well, not so little (nine pounds three-fourths ounce) boy, and named him Robert Ellis Bareuther or for short REB. Dick has just finished up with Uncle Sam out at Fort Sill, Okla., and should be about ready to start working for Scott Paper Company in a retail sales capacity. Congratulations, Dick!

ALL ABOUT EVERYTHING

In a note from "Tiger" Sands I find that he was going to be an official for the Nordic events of the Olympics and that John Baldwin, who is at Cal. Tech., and Pete Buckley, who has been doing a lot of skiing around Hanover this past winter, were also making the trip. As for people at a glance according to Bob, Skiff McCallister was up for Carnival with a most attractive young lady; Ted Johanson was up skiing and is thinking about going to Tuck; Rod Anderson, who is in the Army Intelligence group, is reported to be playing on a hockey team of ex-college men that play in and around Washington.

One man I certainly did not mean to miss but did while taking an inventory of Harvard grad students was Majid Tehranian who is on a Harvard Fellowship studying Middle Eastern studies and Government. Majid informs me also that he spent his summer days at the United Nations where he represented Iran on the UN Interne Program.

Ken Williams, according to Cary Stiff, has yet to be jinxed but rather seems to be reversing the trend of marriage, wielding rather than submitting to the scalpel. Ken has stated that he has been working in dead earnest, his cadaver. Carl also stated that John May has finished up his last term in Hanover and is now considering either becoming a scriptwriter for some educational film company in Pennsylvania or enlisting in one of Uncle Sam's many beneficial officer-training programs.

Also mentioned was the fact that Stu Summers, who is connected with an insurance company in Hartford, has been working out on the Wesleyan swimming team. Stu is considering writing a book on the art of diving, and Carl comments it might not be the most definitive of works, but it would probably be the most literate. Carl himself is busy at the University of Kansas doing graduate work in English while teaching six hours of freshman composition as an assistant instructor.

UNCLE SAM

Last but certainly not least we look to the military side of things and this month do not find too much happening.

Kirk Walters has just finished four weeks of radar school and has returned to his ship, the USS Staten Island, an icebreaker. DicikKulp and Hugh Bishop are both stationed at Fort Eustis, Va., where they are going through the Army Transportation School. Also present in that area are Kent Rickenbaugh, who is in charge of a truck platoon, and TedRobinson who is also attending the school. Hugh has a six-month tour while Rick is hitched up for two years. With two years, Dick has a very good opportunity of gaining foreign duty after he completes his next school, jump school.

Howie Geiger, Whitney Evans and JohnMacManus have just completed the officers' basic course at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., while Craig Harlan just completed the ten-week photographic laboratory operation course at the Army Signal School, Fort Monmouth, N. J. Bill Cullen has also completed an Army school, that of the Adjutant General's School, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.

Well, that completes this month's dissertation and again I must put out a plea for one or two snapshots so that they may be entered in the MAGAZINE and save me some writing time. - Horse
