Last month, we suggested that not all '51s were of one mind about the fall mini-reunion seminar subject. Hap Person offered more opposition. He greencards us from Plymouth, Mass., that "a brief try at Fire in the Belly was enough. I demanded my money back from Walden's. Let's get on with the old traditions."
Many of you know my mom, Helen Brooks, '17 survivor. She periodically sends along Vermont- New Hampshire media with Dartmouth news. Recently, it was the November 7, 1991, Valley News and a wonderfully amusing report about Jeff Hart's probably overzealous attack on a local custom he encountered while traveling in Grand Rapids last summer. It's too long to detail here, but see if you can get Jeff to tell the story himself when you run into him.
Buck Scott, "motoring" around Santa Cruz out on the coast, knew he wasn't far from Jimand Dorrie Balderston and asked a local if he was anywhere near Portola. The reply came, "that's where all the rich folks live." Buck made contact but found Jim was working Saturday morning ("which is probably why he's rich"). Dr. Joe Lindner, another Easterner, had also chosen the same day to drop by unannounced. With Baldy not home, Dorrie entertained Buck and Joe with a visit to the Price Club, Joe being obsessed with getting a deal on cashews. The three then met Baldy at the Menlo Club, where Baldy's golf outfit belied any pretense at Saturday morning industry. After a highly entertaining lunch, Baldy, Dorrie, and Joe went out for a round of golf while Buck resumed his original route, visiting his daughter in Santa Cruz.
Gebby and Sandy McDonald, Shirleyand Hank Sanders, Skip Brooks, and the Scribe met in New Haven in January for lunch and the Yale hockey game. Yale at that moment had only one loss, Dartmouth only one win. The game was much closer than either team or most fans had expected until Yale slammed in the winning goal in the closing moments. You've read that Hank was recently elected Darien's first selectman (i.e. mayor). Says he's paid for half time but works fall time. (I used to have a job like that.) Sandy is still working, and his future plans are uncertain, but you can bet they include his sailboat.
My neighbor Dominick "Bud" Griffin '37 and I have just interviewed three local candidates for the class of 1996. If you want to contribute a little time to the College and meet some of the outstanding young people in your area, this is a truly enriching experience. Of course, it may make you wonder how you ever got accepted back in 1947. But it's fun to talk to bright young people about their dreams.
We were saddened to learn about Warren"Stretch" Mulloy's death on January 14 in Philadelphia after a three-year fight with leukemia. Stretch's obituary will appear in a future issue. Our condolences have been expressed to the family.
If you see a classmate in the newspaper, send it along to me or Batch. Next time we 11 tell you about the February mini in Hanover.
