For those who turn 50 this month, we hope you have a wonderful second half-century. I have news from the grand mini-reunion. The bonfire was impressive, the football team looked great as the Big Green rolled up a halftime lead of 30-0 over the bewildered Bulldogs, and many '65s were present for the celebration. Ted Atkinson and Anne were up for the weekend, but they missed the football game because they were at Deerfield Academy to watch their daughter Emily play center forward for the soccer team. Emily's twin, Andrea, is the center halfback at Hotchkiss School. When the two teams met in late October, Ted and Ann rooted for their daughters, not for a team. Ted III is a freshman at New York Institute of Technology.
Mo Harvey and Karin were up for the class reunion and for the grand reunion of more than 140 brothers of Tri-Kap who were celebrating the fraternity's 150th Anniversary.
Bill Webster and Sue were present, and Bill responded to my plea for news. He reports that Billy graduated from Babson College and is now working in Framingham, Mass. Scott is a junior at Gettysburg but is off for a term abroad in Seville, Spain. Tim is now pushing four years of age and has started nursery school. Jay, almost two, keeps things lively at home.
Ken McGruther has added to his duties in Colorado. He continues as director of wargaming at U.S. Space Command, but he sometimes puts on a cowboy hat now that he is working part time with the Pines Ranch, one of Colorado's several "dude and guest ranches." He also dons a golfer's hat at St. Andrews Golf Course in Westcliffe. He says, "retirement in Colorado within the next year or two is looking better all the time." Ken also agreed to assist me in the gathering of information for this column. We plan to set up an army of agents in various regions of the Earth. Each classmate will dig up information and pass it on to me here at headquarters, where my staff will put out this unclassified information for each issue of the wonderful magazine which you now hold. Expect a classmate to invite you to "serve your class" as an information agent. Bruce Jolly and his large staff at the Newsletter Headquarters will join in the effort.
I would like to thank Jim Ramsey for this interesting report from his perspective. Jim says, "At Dartmouth Night, the best rallying speech was given by a member of the '92 crew. I was there in Cincinnati when Harvard nipped Dartmouth by a bowball (three inches). The wonder of it was that in three last strokes before the finish line, Dartmouth was ahead on two of them just not the middle one, the one at the line. That's where tradition counts. Dartmouth went on to continue winning in the summer, including another win over Harvard for two out of three in 1992. So we've got a tradition for crew now at Dartmouth. They train at Oak Ridge, so I'm especially proud of them."
In future Class Notes columns, I will finish the mini-reunion report. Other classmates to be mentioned will include Rich Beams, TedBracken, Larry Duffy, Rich Finnerty, JimGriffiths, Roger Hansen, Frank Hermes,Norman Leach, Stu Lieber, PunchLochridge, Tom Meacham, BobMcConnaughy, Hugh McGee, Mike Orr,Dennis Purnell, Steve Waterhouse, AllenZern, and yours truly, Jack Heidbrink.
In the meantime, send me news of yourself. For only 29 cents, your news will go to hundreds of classmates who read this column.
