Ed Holbrook and wife Gwen are enjoying life in Carefree, Ariz. After Ed retired from his dental practice 20 years ago they lived in beautiful Sedona, and five years ago moved to Carefree. They have trained and shown many breeds of dogs, from Doberman pinschers to Maltese, and have had 20 champions. They are down to two Dobermans now, and Ed says that's enough with five acres to care for.
Not many, if any, of our class are younger than the state of Arizona, which joined the other 47 in 1912. So a native Arizonian is rare, but we have one. Ken Todd and his wife live in neighboring Sun City, Ariz. He retired from his law practice and says he feels "pretty good," but doesn't get around as much.
Touring battlefields has always been interesting for many of us. Dick and MaryOlmsted visited a battleground which few of us will ever see—the Falkland Islands, the site of the Great Britain-Argentina war of 1982. They took a side trip to the Islands on their way to Antarctica.
"The trip down through the roaring forties to the south Shetlands and the Antarctic mainland encountered a sudden change," said Dick. Surface water temperature drops suddenly. The sea roughs up as when tides meet, and the wind howls. We went ashore in Antarctica via Zodiacs—rubber tube boats. It was occasionally hairy getting on or off, and we wore knee-high boots to wade around the water and penguin droppings." They made it back to Punta Arenas on the Straight of Magellan and then went home to Nokomis, Fla., where they are probably reading the stories of Magellan, Drake, and Two Years Before the Mast.
