After a great deal of discussion and due deliberation, the ad hoc committee awarded the 1992 Unusual Travel Award to Bill Fitzhugh. His eldest son was one of the lecturers aboard the cruise ship Aurora 1. Bill seized the opportunity to join a Smithsonian tour flying to Tokyo, traveling by sea up the coast of Japan, through the Kuril Islands to Russian Siberia, from Sakhalin Island to Kamchatka, to the Chinese border near Vladivostok, then north by air to Magadan and east to Anchorage. Bill still found time to compose a 51 -line Christmas poem entitled "Quills and Quarks at Christmas Time." There was a P.S. from a self-designated "Dragon Lady" (presumably Florrie) which filled in many details of the trip.

In a roundabout way we heard that LineWashburn is still organizing his ten years of Arctic research for publication and that Tahoe is beginning to get used to two new hips. Scottiand Pat McPherson are "traveled out," having done Portugal, Spain, New Jersey, and Minnesota, topped off by a three-week cruise from Athens, Ga., to Ft. Lauderdale. Although claiming to be arthritic and only semi-active, they lawn bowl daily when at Mt. Dora.

Chuck Gillan from Houston wrote a message about how much he enjoyed the class newsletter, but with a reminder that much of his time and energy is devoted to the challenging task of managing the infirmities of advancing age.

A memorial service was held in January at the Gulfgate Golf Club for Joe Fellows and his wife, Alison. Many of their friends attended, including Ralph and Trudie Specht,Frank and Edie Specht, Rey and LauraMoulton, Ken and Gwen Webster, and Margarete Van Antwerpen. Ralph recalled several occasions when he had martinis and then gave the martini-soaked olives to Joe (at the time a non-drinker) as a substitute for the real thing.

Bud and Doris McClarin live on one of the barrier islands off the New Jersey coast. During the storm in mid-December the flood waters were so high that, although there was no structural damage, insulation, electrical circuits, refrigerators, etc., had to be replaced.
