After 17 years as our scribe, Thomas G. Jackson will be sharing responsibility for these Class Notes with yours truly, Don O'Neill, before turning over the reins in November. During his tenure as class secretary (and a five-year stint on the newsletter before that) Tom has done a great job of helping us keep up with each other's scattered lives and was involved in numerous class activities, including the Alumni Fund and reunions. Thanks, Tom, from all of us!

Now to the news. In July R. Nelson "Oz"Griebel, who has been with Bank of Boston since 1976, was named chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Bank of Boston Connecticut as part of a reorganization in conjunction with the bank's takeover of Connecticut-based Society for Savings. Oz will oversee an operation with $4.8 billion in assets, 59 branches and 1,400 employees. Congratulations (even a Rouse), Oz! (As a Society stockholder I want to thank B of B for bailing me out!)

Michael Hayden writes that, "after 17 years as a trial attorney, I ran for Superior Court Judge. It was a tough campaign, but I squeaked by and took office in October."

John Lippman wrote last fall to say that he had moved to Los Angeles from Seattle (where he had been with KIRO-TV since 1979) to take the position of news director for KCBS-TV. At last report this "bona-fide two-career couple" represented the NorthSouth version of bi-coastal, commuting between Washington state (where wife Julie continues teaching at the University of Puget Sound), and L.A.

Jeff Mchugh is "celebrating my 21st year as a professional educator, currently as Dean of Students at Middle School. Oldest child, Bridget, planning on grad school; lan, 17, applying to music school; Molly, 15, sophomore, readying herself for varsity basketball. Wife Patty keeps us all in line. Ash Creek String Band's second tape due out soon . . . watch for it on the charts."

Confirming the March "Rouse" section, W. John Short (a.k.a. "Shorty") sent word from Hong Kong that his company—Esprit Far East Ltd. (women's fashions)—completed the acquisition of 60 percent of Esprit Europe. He was elected CEO and board member (keeping basically the same job he had in Asia). He moved in February with his family—Sam 13, Becca 11, Lisa 9, and wife Ethel—to Dusseldorf to assume his new responsibilities.

The mailbag contains announcements of several as-yet unreported 1992 babies, evidence that the class of '71 continues with its effort to place progeny in Dartmouth classes well into the next century. Ned Jackson and wife Jill's "beautiful daughter Veronica" arrived on September 29. Ned's other two children, Ned Jr. 22 and Heather 19, are in college in Ontario and Ohio, while Ned is currently working as senior counsel for Aetna Life in Toronto. Bob Lamarre's daughter Katrina was born November 3 in Denver, where she lives with mom Laura Wray, dad, and brother Brendan (now two and a half). Bob is an exploration geologist with Texaco; Laura is a consulting geologist with Amoco.

Jerry O'Brien's son Casey checked in last August and should soon be helping out in the old man's developing real-estate empire.

That's all for this month. Please send your news so I can keep feeding the column monster. If you don't like letters, call me at (203) 547-3600 or fax me at (203) 547-5966.
