The scholarships established by our classmates have paid off handsomely. A letter received recently from the Office of Financial Aid reviews the achievements of past recipients and gives the qualifications of the five selected to replace recent graduates. The graduates all turned out to be top scholars, and the appointees appear to be eminently worthy. The six-page letter is too detailed to summarize here. However, I will be happy to send a copy to any of you who request it.

A lengthy article in Dartmouth Medicine describes our emeritus professor of biology Bill Ballard as the Johnny Appleseed of the ladyslipper. His botanical activities were described in these notes a couple of years ago. His research on ladyslipper propagation is funded by the American Orchard Society. Also, he is conducting research in the development of vertebrate fish. He found existing textbooks on the subject to be wrong. In addition, he is still active in the Handel Society, which he and his late wife, Elizabeth, joined many years ago. These activities should keep Bill out of mischief for the next ten years or so.

Another active class member is Ted Baehr who, as I was reminded by someone, still appears in TV ads for Carnation Milk and Nuveen tax-free investments.

I regret to report the death of Red Sanborn on July 30 of heart failure.
