News that Eliot Smith had been appointed director of the Committee for the Advancement of Labor and Management Relations in South Bend, Ind., reached me recently. A call to him revealed that this position has been created under a grant from the state of Indiana to establish a regional quality council for local quality initiatives. Eliot plans to start activities in government, industry, education, and health-care fields in his new role. He spent more than 20 years in the building-products business in sales, marketing, and general management and became a consultant in 1993 in the field of quality. Eliot has three grown children, and his wife, Elaine, also has three. They both lost prior spouses to illness. Between them they now have nine grandchildren. The Smiths visited Harry and Margy Ambrose in Wisconsin last summer and are planning to make the reunion next June.

Treasurer Ralph Sautter forwarded several notes received with dues payments from classmates. Frank Chase reported that he and Carole planned to make Homecoming weekend. His retirement from government service has become a frenzy of volunteering, senior organizations, and consulting work. It sounds like he has discovered the meaning of "active retirement." Frank is now running for an Orphans Court Judgeship, the Maryland name for Probate Court. He faces both a primary and the general election, an entirely new but fan experience he says. Norm Lavene says that he has not set foot in Hanover since June 1955, but he still enjoys hearing news of the College and appreciated Ralph's letter. Norm has lived in Israel for 26 years.

Elmira College has named Asaph "Ace"Hall as its new chairman of the board of trustees effective last June. Ace has been on

the board since 1989 and has served on many of its committees. He retired as corporate vice president information systems and administrative services at General Dynamics Corporation last year. Ace and Dorothy currently have homes in the Washington area and Florida.

History professor Jere Daniell was selected to give the Hall Memorial Lecture last August during the 15 th annual Sudbury Canada Days in Bethel, Maine. Jere's topic was "Town Founding in Maine: The Special Case of Sudbury Canada." Perhaps we can prevail on Jere to enlighten us on this subject at June's reunion. A specialist in early American history and the history of New England, he is the author of several books and articles in his field.

Under the leadership of John French, our class reunion committee is hard at work on the project which will bear fruit June 12-15 in Hanover. Among those who have agreed to serve with John are Tom Byrne, music and history, Pete Thompson, attendance, SkipHance, food and favors, Dick Mount and JimWechsler, golf and tennis, and Jere Daniell, programs. There will also be opportunity for pre and post-reunion activities, and provisions are being made for accommodations, including RV spaces for the entire week. Further planning took place during the class executive committee meeting on October 15.
