"And the next brother at AXA is Ted Wingate '77!" The crowd merely snored, as sink night entered its second week at Memorial Stadium for the Purple Gang. "Gate" had merely answered a New York Times ad, shown up on Sunday night, and become the bicentennial member of his pledge class, which included some Hanover High School juniors. Although his four years at Dartmouth were filled with anonymity, he has now made the big time class of 1977 secretary. And, as Governor Carey once endorsed Mayor Koch, I invite you to welcome our new back-door neighbor. I am hopeful that Gate will be a bit more punctual than the still-younger Russ Campion '79, who has instituted a bimonthly column!

Take a deep breath. Paul Ricotta, nickname of Mer, remember him? He used to wear a batting helmet which doubled as a beer mug; about as friendly as Bill Dexter. The guy is now married. This was the only event that could ever bring Sigma Nu to Buffalo or perhaps anyone else for that matter. For instance, Dave Hall, perennial student, was able to abandon his business/law/medicine/philosophy work to attend. Peter Holekamp, the last Dartmouth grad in St. Louis, made the journey from one wasteland to another. BruceKaufman displayed all the classic grace of an aspiring surgeon as he knocked a waitress to the ground as she was carrying dinner to the wedding party. Of course, the food was consumed greedily by Stoney Morrell, Steve McKenna, and John Lee, who are either struggling in the North Woods or sculpting them. Steve McGlone was head usher, and reputedly seated the guests with the same efficiency he now uses at Turner Construction. Patrick McHugh was not in attendance the day the GAU flag flew at half mast.

All of Freeport, Ill., rejoiced the day SteveKaiser finally became engaged to his hometown honey, Barb. Steve was concerned that his ten-year courtship might seem a bit hasty to the staunchly financial crowd in neighboring Lena. The wedding party will wear "I Like Ike" buttons.

He is going to kill me when he reads this, since I told him I might not print it. It is the classic struggle between personal privacy and the public's right to know. I suppose we could debate it all night long, but, well ... I just have to comply with the peoples' wish. TomGarden is married! Yes, the Irish and Italians have signed a lasting agreement to love and cherish until death do them part. The audience was a bit selective, with Mark Panella picking the reception to break the word 'cavalier' into his vocabulary. Other attendees included RobCeplikas, Joe Sullivan, Curt Oberg, GeorgeVieth, Drew Breen, and Jeff Nadherney. Nads is now organizing anti-Jane Fonda campaigns at Logan Airport. The "Dartmouth Grad of the Evening" award goes to Frank Ames '44, who hosted the reception. Tommy and Carlotta are a great couple!

Andy Welch has been named assistant director of admissions at St. Lawrence, while he finishes a master's at Colgate.

From New York banker to mercenary? A Club Med excursion gone bad? Anyway, Sally Eastman certainly had an interesting summer in Kenya during coup season. Our traveling classmate's paradise was disturbed one morning by gunfighting and chaos. At last word, Sally was under martial law, waiting for the next flight out-probably like spending your freshman year in the Wigs. It seems trouble erupted when a splinter tribe demanded recognition for a favorable comparison to the civilized world, most notably Jack Kiernan.

Jerry Widdicombe's reunion reminders, on how to travel to Hanover:

We realize that no longer can you get in your car, utter the magic words, "Take me to Hanover," and expect to wind knowingly through the hills of Vermont and New Hampshire back to school. The roads are a blur, and some of you forget whether Tally House is in White River Junction or West Lebanon. Thus the following suggestion: Fly. Air New England is now out of business, although you can still get to Lebanon by another commuter line. But your best bets are Boston's Logan Airport or New York's Laguardia Airport. If you fly to New York, Marc Farley has offered to give you a lift to Hanover. Have a safe trip!
