Notes this month come to you courtesy of guest columnist Gisele LaffayePansze. Take it away, Gisele! "Kate Haffiier was featured in a Glamour magazine article on gays and lesbians in the workplace. Caroline McKeldin is now a published author: Japanese Jive is the name of her book. Look for it at your local bookseller. Bob Kempainen recently made it into Sports Illustrated for his marathon performances.
"Also a marathoner but going for different sort of record is Scott Jaynes. Currendy in his residency in Salt Lake City, Scott aims to complete something like 25 consecutive Boston Marathons—he's run six or seven so far. For training, Scott enjoys what the majority of us would consider torture. An example would be The Challenge, a six-mile race up the steep (some cars can't even make it) Bolton Valley Access Road in Bolton, Vt. As if that weren't enough, did we mention that Scott runs while others ride their mountain bikes? Two years ago Scott won, and last year he lost by a mere mountain-bike length. This year's race is October 30. Maybe this year we can persuade Karl Goetze to be a rider.
"A few years ago a false engagement announcement for Pat Brophy and Lesley Barnes '87 was mailed to the DAM (we hear Eric Kloninger was responsible). The scam was uncovered when the DAM editor called Lesley (she had been an intern at the mag) to offer congratulations. This announcement is rumored to have caused complete stoppage of the presses and was retracted at the 11th hour. Well, now it's finally official. Pat and Lesley tied the knot in Kennebunkport, Maine. They honeymooned in Europe for a few months, returning just in time for Bart Rickenbaugh's wedding (see last issue).
"We hear Rob Combi was the best man at Kevin Griffin's wedding on June 18. RossAmpel and John "Fatty" Harris traveled to all of the East Coast weddings this year in addition to that of Jim Lancaster '89 and wife Erika in Colorado. We commend Ross and Fatty on their efforts but wonder: where do they work, and can we work there too?
"Kirn Chaplin Baretta and her husband, Julian, are expecting a child in late February or early March. They live in Paris and work for Procter & Gamble, she as a brand manager and he in the finance department. They have been doing quite a bit of traveling throughout Europe but expect their lifestyles will change significantly when the little one arrives.
"Mike Bongiorno and his wife, Judy, celebrated their first anniversary in August. They are living in Winchester, Mass., in a two family house they've recently finished renovating. Mike spends his days litigating for Hale & Door in Boston.
"Mike's Harvard Law School roomie KevinDowney is practicing law in Washington, D.C., at William & Connelley. He was joined at work less than a year ago by Lindsay Held. It seems that Kevin just can't shake Lindsay, who moved in with him for "one week" while he was looking for an apartment. Well, we're happy to report that Lindsay had no trouble finding a place of his own it took him a mere eight months!"
