That's what one reviewer said about the newest Frank Gilroy '50 play to arrive on Broadway, Any Given Day. Featuring "a near sublime cast, headed by the formidable Sada Thompson"2 in a "hauntingly chilling portrait,"3 the new work won warm acclaim from almost every critic, though The New York Times's was luke. "Something like a Chekhovian tragicomedy,"4 the play is a "firstclass all the way play... a dream production"5 involving nine characters, three of whom appeared in Gilroy's Pulitzer-Prize winning The Subject WasRoses. (One of the nine actors is Stephen Pearlman '56.)
While Any Given Day "is a drama of soaring beauty and power... [it is] sprinkled with comedy as we 11."6 In a "near flawless production,"7 Any GivenDay opened at the Longacre Theatre last November. "Like Roses it is intensely autobiographical, an attempt to put to rest the ghosts and memories that shaped and haunt me."8
