ATTENTION former members of the Dartmouth Glee Club: If you haven't been in touch with TomRuggles re. the sing at our June reunion, do so. He's organizing a combined '48-49-50 performance or two. His address: 626 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742; (508) 369-5879.
I had a great phone conversation with Gerry Sarno. He called to say, "It's swell to read about your grandchildren, but. . and proceeded to fill me in on his doings and those of a lot of classmates. Gerry and Ginny live in Gloucester in their converted summer house and keep an apartment in N.Y.C. Gerry, who left Bethlehem Steel for Perini Construction Company some years ago, is retired but works as a consultant to an environmental mediation company. The following shows he gets around.
He plays golf with Bob Funkhouser who is retired and visits the East from Los Angeles every now and then. Gerry also plays golf with Bob Graham, who has retired from his own ad agency and lives in Gloucester. Bob recently had a knee-replacement job done. Gerry bumped into Wally Young while they were both dashing through the Charlotte airport. And Gerry reports that his brotherjoe Sarno, retired from GE, is well and content in a house on a golf course in Boynton Beach, Fla.
The peripatetic (ask Dodie what that means, Charlie) Abbes are off again. This time they're going to Montana, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and South Carolina. They will visit their kids and, I suspect, play a little golf.
Emil Hudak and Whit Williams have kept in touch with each other over the years, probably mostly trading "jock stories." Whit figures that the saga of Ed Leede '49 driving a car onto the baseball field during a game to shake hands with pitcher Hudak will make for lively conversation at Reunion.
Tom Ruggles also reported that he and Janot had a visit from Johnny Knapp and his new bride, Lilia, in October. The Ruggles expect to see the Knapps as well as Joe andHildy Ely on Captiva in Florida this month.
Tom Saw Edie and Dick McSorley in October when they were in town for a memorial service for Dick's dad, a member of the class of 1928. Tom and Janot were moved by Dick's loving and poignant tribute to his father at the service.
Had a nice card from Charlie Fay wishing "All the best to '50." Charlie entered with us and graduated with the class of '49. He says he has finally retired, again.
Betsy Pinkham wrote to bring me up to date on reunion gifts. They are to be a sweater and a set of Dartmouth cork-backed coasters. Thanks to Betsy and the other Hanover- Eastman locals, the rest of us don't have to do much work on the reunion planning.
It's fitting that Smokey the Bear gets a lot of praise for preventing forest fires. But how come no one ever mentions the Boy Scouts he kills for their hats?
My special thanks and appreciation to those few who responded by note or by phone to my vox clamantis for class news.
