It's not too late to plan on attending the fall minireunion in Hanover on October 29-30, the Harvard game and Dartmouth Night weekend. If you have misplaced your reservation form, call Len Matless now, (603) 643-5391. It's always a great time of the year to be in Hanover, and this year's mini will be a good warm-up for our 45 th in June.
The latest to forsake New England and its weather is Frank Harrington. A note from him indicates that he is now happily relocated from Boston to West Palm Beach and is anxious to get together with other Florida '50s.
Frank Barker writes that he and Rosanne are about to celebrate their second anniversary. He is retired from the navy (40 or so years?) and now lives high-and-dry in Tubec, Ariz. I love that part of the country, Frank, having spent a good deal of time out there working on the development of the industrial park in Nogales, Mexico.
Bob Jordan passed away in May. The class sends its deepest sympathies to his wife, Roberta, and the rest of his family.
My stringer in Baltimore reports that JimMelville won the Maryland state outdoor tennis singles for age 65 and over. The guy he beat was ranked the number-1 senior player in the Mid-Atlantic states.
Bob Lindell's latest memo and progress report indicates that things are shaping up well for our 45th Reunion next June 13 to 16, Monday to Thursday. We'll be housed in Gile, Streeter, and Lord on Tuck Mall, and our class tent will be near those of 1948 and 1949. More to follow in Joe's newsletter and this column. In the meantime, if you have any special ideas or suggestions, contact Bob with a note to Box 343, HCR 63, Grantham, NH 03753.
A press release from the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City announces that Dick Leonard has been reelected to its Executive Committee. The DAANYC is the umbrella organization that oversees volunteer activities for N.Y.C. alumni and also governs the Dartmouth Club located in the Yale Club (open, incidentally, to all resident and visiting Dartmouth alumni). Dick continues his responsibilities as DAANYC's liaison for the Dartmouth Gay and Lesbian Association.
The Valley News had a long article recently about Dr. James Strickler under the headline, "Hanover Physician Travels to Bosnia." Jim, former dean of the Dartmouth Medical School, is chairman of the International Rescue Committee's executive committee and was in Bosnia to see how staff members were doing. He has a family practice at the Community Health Center which is a part of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Jim has been involved in work with refugees and displaced persons since 1982. I thought his most poignant quote was, "Why does man do this? Why? Why? Why do we do these things to each other?" Why, indeed.
