A recent painful but heartwarming experience demonstrated to me that the Dartmouth spirit is stronger than ever. My brother Jigger '57 had a daughter, Barbara '90, who was killed in a freak kayaking accident on February 27. We travel eled to Portland, Ore., to memorialize her and celebrate her too-short life with her friends and family. She was a remarkable young woman, and I was struck by the impact she had had, at 25 years, on a large circle of friends and acquaintances. A triathlon winner, biker, kayaker, and marathoner, she had lived a full life with verve and gusto not commonly seen these days. It was heartwarming to hear from all her friends, but especially from the Dartmouth classmates who came from far and wide, of their common concerns for the world and each other, of their joys and sorrows, and their hopes and dreams. A most remarkable few days spent in the thick of recent graduates, in memory of one, showed me that, whatever her faults, Mother Dartmouth is turning out spectacular people of whom we can all be most proud. And anyone who still thinks that coeducation hasn't improved the program at Dartmouth has really been flying blind. Contributions to the Barbara M. Harper Memorial Fund for Women's Crew, Dartmouth College, will be most appreciated.

Our Class of 1956 Scholarship student, James Nohl '94, has narrowed his major down to government and has maintained his GPA at 3.52. James is active in Beta Theta Pi, the Order of Omega, and the men's alpine varsity ski team.

A reunion sweater to the first reader to guess whose College application for the class of '56 is quoted: "In reality, my interests, experiences and relationships have been mainly with people. Therefore, I can safely say that people rather than hobbies or self-pleasures (sic) have contributed the most to my development. It is my belief that every person's career depends upon how he impresses other people. It is for this reason that my interests, experiences and relationships have in one way or another concerned people." (Hint: He still believes it, and he still talks like this.)
