May, come she will . . . Sometimes it's good to know that certain just things don't change the sun rises every morning, robins do come back, no matter how rough the winter. Charles Parker will wear shorts, no matter where he is or how cold it may be. When he's at work as the director of tribal operations for the Valdez (Alaska) Native Association he has succumbed to outside pressures and has allowed himself to be constricted in pants and "gasp!" tie watch out for heat stroke. Charles is also "on the local Planning and Zoning Commission, the board of directors of the Prince William Sound Science Center, and a basketball coach for sixth to eighth grades." This fall he may enter the political life by running for city council (potentially the first '93 elected official?), or he'll move further northward to become an economic development specialist for the Tanana Chiefs Conference, which is a large non-profit organization overseeing 43 native villages.
From Chas ("just call me Siskell"), a review of Steven Seagal's On Deadly Ground: "Not his best." First, "there are not really any Eskimo tribes this far south [Valdez], just a few of us stray ones in Indian Territory." Second, "Eskimos do not dance naked it's too damn cold even this far south." However, "It's almost worth watching just to see the scenery." Thank you, Charles.
Now on to the domestic front, "Startling things are going on in my life," writes DanFoster. "I have recently noticed that I now ask teen-aged girls for their phone numbers so that they can babysit for me, and I've been looking at nursery schools. There is a Volvo wagon (the quintessential family car) in my garage. At Dartmouth I didn't even have a checking account or a credit card. Now I have a broker and read the business section before the comics." Whoah.
"In a vain attempt to put a dent in the loans accrued from my 'Dartmouth Experience,"' Walker White has been working at an engineering firm in Oak Ridge, Tenn. officially as an environmental scientist, but primarily as a troubleshooter. In August he'll start working towards a Ph.D. in mathematics at Cornell. Out of the office, Walker's been backpacking the Smokies, "a climate-friendly alternative" to the White Mountains. He has kept in touch with Jason Bogal and G.Michael Evans, who are sharing an abode in Mountain View, Calif. Jason's a database programmer at ACS ("the people who make the 4th Dimension program for the Mac"); and Michael is working on the operating system for the joint IBM/Apple PowerPC.
"Mr. DFS Guy and Resident Film Guru" Jeff Middents has spent the year watching movies (the themes: "Screwballs" 93X, "School Daze" 93F, "Border Crossings" 94W, and "Cinema-Tech" 945) and TA-ing English 23 for some folks' UGA, Julie Kalish '91. This summer he'll still be in Hanover as the intern for the Telluride Film Festival, and then away from the plain for a Ph.D. in film and literature. He's not sure where yet, but the acceptances are rolling in: U-Mass and U. of lowa so far. Jeff, along with Craig Sakowitz, NormRoye, and Rick Owen jumped on the Glee Club Spring Break Tour, Jeff as the business manager. En route, they met Dave Kaiser,Kristin Anderson, and Brandon Adams. Brandon was the concert chair for the Houston concert. For the remainder of the spring, Jeff will be waiting tables with the rest of the '93 class in Hanover (Rebecca McCallum,Deb Shearer, and Julie Donahue) at Peter Christian's.
Parting shots, from Dan: "In short, I'm just a few years ahead of the rest of you." I think I may take my time catching up.
And from Chas: "Take care, and remember that every once in a while you need to forget that we're responsible citizens now, and go drink one too many." OK.
The Alumni Mag doesn't publish for a couple months, so fill me in and I'll talk to you in the August. Don't forget, cover up, use lots of sunscreen, and reapply.
