Hanover police have had to change their policies as a result of negotiations between the town, police, the College, and the American Civil Liberties Union, represented by Steve Borofsky. Apparently some students had complained last year that they were arrested for "internal possession" of alcohol without other incriminating evidence. Internal possession means having alcohol in their bellies, but not possessing alcohol externally, as in carrying beer or liquor containers. Students and other underage drinkers were stopped while walking the streets of Hanover or in other non-driving circumstances, given an "alci-sensor" test, and arrested without warrants. The new policy adopted by Hanover police will require that warrants first be obtained and that those who are arrested must be informed they have a right to refuse the alci-sensor test. An article in the New Hampshire Sunday News pointed out that the policy change "has nothing to do with underage drinkers who drink and drive or the ability of police to hold an intoxicated individual in protective custody."

At the helm of Applied Immune Science Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., you will find Tom Okarma. Tom founded Applied Immune in 1985 after securing a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Stanford in 1972 and a medical degree from Stanford in 1974. Tom spent the early 1980s as assistant director of geriatric research and chief of immunology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Jose. Apparently, his duties as chairman, CEO, and chief scientific officer don't keep him busy enough. He has held down a position as clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford since 1991.

June 18 was a happy day for Arnie Resnicoff at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where Arnie married Paula Hertzberg. Arnie's note indicated that their honeymoon would take them wherever the next two "space available" flights from the closest military air terminal would take them. Geez, Arnie, I hope it wasn't a hop to Adak, Alaska. Or Iceland.
