"Final Illusions About Vietnam Crumble," an article in the Valley News by Bill Riley, of Meriden, N.H., is a personal and painful reaction to Robert McNamara's book. Bill describes the death of Duncan, a fraternity brother, killed by a stray bullet while getting a haircut, and how Bill and an unidentified classmate, both military veterans, argued against "30 screaming radicals" at the Top of the Hop in 1966. "I hope that those who opposed the war...do not merely gloat in their vindication," writes Bill. ".. .it makes me wonder what I would tell my friend Duncan. That the sacrifice of his life was worthwhile?"

Jeff Nothnagle entered banking in Boston from Pepperidge Farm/Campbells. At Shawmut, he established the corporate finance department. He was executive VP at Baybank Harvard, and an exec at Quincy Savings. A Tuck grad and Vietnam veteran, Jeff lives in Cohasset. He and Taffy have three children

Bob Greenwood's Sun.Ergos, a theater and dance company in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, opened its season last month with the world premiere of Birds of Stone/Stones of Blood, based on Aztec, Maya, and Inca cultures. A color photo of Launny Steffans, chief of brokerage, is featured on Merrill Lynch's home page on the World Wide Web (http:/www.ml.com). The recendy reported contraction of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, the leading takeover law firm, was "more of a crisis in our minds.... We were so used to wild success," top partner Morris Kramer told The Wall Street Journal. Skadden still handles the most M&A and general corporate work, the Journal said. Jerry Garcia, 53, the imperturbable guitarist of the Grateful Dead, died in the summer. He was not a classmate, but his music and philosophy originated in our era. Don't forget mini-reunions October 28 in the parking lot of Harvard B-School and November 4 at Columbia's stadium. Call Bob Bysshe, (212) 454-3727.
