The 50th anniversary this year of the end of the Second World War, the dedication of the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and Veterans Day this November has made me reflect this month on our classmates who have performed military service or who are still on active duty.
At the outset I want to reassure any veteran readers that it is the style manual of the Alumni Magazine, not any lack of respect on my part, that dictates lowercase for "army, navy, air force, marine corps, and coast guard." Our class was the last to enter Dartmouth with naval reserve officer training corps members on scholarship. Most have since left the navy and returned to civilian life. Bruce Alexander now practices law in Baltimore, Md. Chuck Appleby works for the Scitor Corp.and lives in Vienna, Va. Steve Webster lives in Carlisle, Mass. Chris Pratt is in state government and lives in Dedham, Mass. Mark Kiley works for the Charles Sadek Import Co. in New Rochelle, N.Y., and lives in Orange, Conn.
Many thanks to Bill Mayer, who I called to help me recall the names of some members of that stalwart band of naval ROTC members. Bill, himself a navy scholarship holder, had a knee injury while at Dartmouth that forced his withdrawal from the program after his second year. Bill went on to obtain a master's degree in 1974 from the University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa, before going to the University of Virginia Law School, where he was editor of the Virginia Law Review. Bill first practiced law at Covington and Burling in Washington before heading to the Boston firm of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar, where he is a partner. Bill, wife Leslie, and their four children live in Marshfield, Mass.
Commander John Woodhouse recently retired from the navy after serving as public affairs officer at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., where senior officers of the navy and other services study global strategy and the projection of naval power in peace and in war. Still on active duty are marine lieutenant colonels Charlie Arnold and Jackie Clark. Charlie looks after marine corps affairs including recruiting in the Philadelphia-based 4th Marine Corps District that includes several surrounding states. Jackie is a branch head in the marine corps' testing and evaluation organization at the combat development center in Quantico, Va.
Major Tom Sweet is with a refueling squadron at Platts burgh Air Force Base in northern New York. Michael Marohn is a physician at the U.S. Air Force Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Some of you may have served on active duty or in reserve units or in state national guard units. There are also three other federal services, the U.S. Public Health Service, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Peace Corps in which Dartmouth alumni have served. Please let me know for future reference if you are among them.
