Last summer, somehow, the Chicago Tribune picked up a quotable quote from our own Scott Pardee, senior adviser at the Japanese broker Yamaichi International located in New York City. Commenting on the dollar reaching nearly a six-month high, Scott was quoted as saying, "Buy dollars and wear diamonds." May still be good advice if you are looking for a last-minute Christmas present.

If you happen to see the initials "STI" during the credits on a TV sports program, you will be watching a production by the company Jim Spence put together several years ago when he left ABC Sports. This month look for the NBC telecast Nutcracker on Ice for an example of what he is up to these days. When not busy with this, if you listen closely, you will probably hear him and Jake Jacobus jawing over a friendly game of golf somewhere in New Jersey.

Recently in Jaffrey, N.H., John Voll, spoke on the topic, "Muslims and the West: Ho-w Can We Live Together?" He noted, "To many Westerners, a Muslim is somebody other than us, somebody who's often frightening and mysterious. Westerners have found it handy to have a mysterious people we don't like on which to pin fears and misunderstandings." At the same time, he asked, "Is Muslim resentment of the West just so much hyperbole from radical sects, or a pervasive, permanent attitude fostered by the very nature of Islam?" He urged those attending to understand the differences between Muslim and Western cultures as one way for the disparate sides to get along. After spending 30 years at the University of New Hampshire teaching Middle Eastern, Islamic, and world history, this past fall John has become professor of Islamic history at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University.

In Hartford, Conn., Herb Isaacson is continuing a family tradition. Herb has just been elected the chairman of the Winsted Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. His father served in the same capacity in the mid-19505. When not engaged in the affairs of the hospital, he is practicing law specializing in real estate, condominium, and health-care law. With John Murphy practicing there as well, it seems Hartford is blessed with the services of at least two '5 8s in the area of law
