From Southern California comes word that Don Shagrin has been appointed president of the California Group of Smith Barney. Don will be responsible for five divisions encompassing the states of California and Hawaii. You have come a long way from the winters you spent growing up in Cleveland, Don.
Also making news in the financial world is Bob Downey. Two more people to look up in Atlanta if you are planning on attending the Olympics there in 1996: Buck Latimore continues to hang out his lawyer's shingle there; and just in case your eyes have trouble reading signs at a distance or telephone books up close, TomObard can help you out. Tom is on the faculty of the medical school at Emory specializing in ophthalmology.
Last spring Stephen Nichols, professor of French and humanities at Johns Hopkins University, was busily minding his own business preparing for the coming semester when the phone rang. Much to his surprise it was the provost calling to ask him to be the interim director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. Johns Hopkins, like many of our institutions of higher education, is now engaged in a capital campaign. According to the provost, Stephen's highest priority will be to manage the library's portion. Prior to coming to the university two years ago, he held teaching posts at UCLA, the University of Wisconsin, Dartmouth, and, most recently, the University of Pennsylvania.
Another one of our classmates who is not letting the dust settle in retirement is DaveSharrock. After a long career with Marrion Merrell Dow, at which he finished as executive vice president and chief operating officer, he was recently appointed to an adjunct faculty position at Ohio State University's College of Pharmacy. There he will lecture in the fields of pharmacy practice and administration.
At our class weekend last October it was great to see Ted Furber again. Ted came east from Minneapolis, where he has been active in Dartmouth activities while continuing his work as a lawyer. We enjoyed dinner together at the Lyme Inn with about 60 of our classmates and wives. It is some way off, but circle your calendars for next year's mini-reunion, which will be held on October 25. This will mark the 100 th anniversary of Dartmouth Night, so it should be even more special than usual.
