Dartmouth Project 59, our new public-service class project, is officially launched! The DP 59 Steering Committee has already met twice and is making good progress toward resolving all of the organizational and logistical issues. The goal is to have this student-intern/classmatementor program in full gear by our 35th Reunion in June.
Our second meeting, held on December 5, featured a long discussion with the top officials from the Tucker Foundation and centered on ensuring that our program would not compete with existing Tucker programs but would offer students experiences not currently afforded them. Some useful perspectives and suggestions came out of this discussion.
Karl Holtzschue has agreed to serve as president of the steering committee. A mission statement and a set of selection criteria for candidate public-interest programs has already been developed. Lee Wilson is drafting a charter encompassing these and other key elements of the project. This charter will serve as the basis for our application for legal status as a 501 C3 non-profit entity.
Meanwhile, Mike Stern has already acted as a mentor for a Dartmouth student in one pilot internship this summer. He and Karl agreed to serve as mentors for two more student interns this winter. These should give us a base of experience from which to build.
Marty Sherwin, head of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding has agreed to help us coordinate our unique program with other internship programs offered at Dartmouth.
Several members of the steering committee (Karl Holtzschue, Jim Wooster, ScottPalmer, Marty Sherwin, Joanne Wise, and John Ferries) planned to meet with Dartmouth administration officials (Acting President Jim Wright and Provost Lee Bollinger) on January 27 to get their input and support.
So, we're off to a jump-start. But there's a lot to do ahead. We encourage all classmates and spouses to join our steering committee and be a part of this bold initiative by the class of '59. We need your ideas and help. Please contact Karl at (212) 535-1912 or John at (212) 468-3030. Other current members of the steering committee include Jim Burner, TinaColehower, Chris Cundey, Gil Griffin,Bill G. Long, Stu Mackler, Arlene Matusow,Larry Toal, and Alan Ziegler.
The birth and development of this project typifies the growing commitment by more and more classmates to be involved in positive and worthwhile class activities. Such are the dimensions of our 35 th Reunion. If you haven't sent your green card in, do so. Or call me at (603) 795-2888 or fax me at (603) 795-2890. Not only do we need you to be involved and in attendance, but we know you'll find it rewarding and fun.
Keep the cards and letters coming. We want to share your news.
