If you have sent me a note or called with news since mid-November, do not be disappointed if your item doesn't appear here. The publication schedule of our Alumni Magazine has a seasonal gap (no January issue) that requires copy for this issue to be submitted in November, long before Christmas cards and letters arrive. Next month's class notes hopefully will runneth over with names, places, and happenings mentioned in your holiday dispatches.
Mike Onderick assumed management last August as president of the John Zink Company in Wichita, Kans. Since 1981 he has held various key positions with the firm's parent company, Koch Industries Inc. Mike, a mechanical-engineering major at Dartmouth, received a M.B.A. at the Harvard Business School in 1979. Koch Industries is the second largest privately held company in the U.S. The company is involved in virtually all phases of the oil and gas industry, as well as in chemicals, chemical technology products, agriculture, hard minerals, real estate, and financial investments.
An update on the end-of-season fortunes of coach Steve Stetson's Hartwick College football team in Oneonta, N.Y.: You may recall from the November issue of the Alumni Magazine that we featured Stet's progress since 1991 in re-establishing an intercollegiate football program at Hartwick. Stet's 1994 season ended with a very respectable record of seven wins and only three losses. Not bad for a team in its third year of competition.
Remember also that in 1992 Stet fielded his first varsity Hartwick team, which was entirely freshmen. They should all be returning as seniors for the 1995 season.
Last June Bobby Soltess and I, both former line managers of the Dartmouth Dining Association, sat in Thayer Hall reminiscing about working the breakfast shift during the early hours of dark winter mornings in February. Bob is now working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Office of Life and Microgravity in Washington, D.C. Bobby, wife Darlene, and family live in Herndon, Va.
That's all of the news of a terrestrial and celestial nature concerning our classmates. Help turn my February into a winter carnival by writing, calling, or faxing me with an update about yourself or other '73s. Be well. Do good work. Keep in touch.
