Here's a letter from JohnFoster. Since he not onlymailed it but then faxed it when I hadn't received it, it's appearing pretty much in its entirety:
"Here's all the news I've got concerning those '84s whose activities can be described in a family magazine. Eric 'Jughead' Hirst is studying the behavior of water molecules at conditions of great pressure and depth at the University of Washington. I think this is known as 'fluid dynamics.'John Hurd is a consultant and cybernaut, traveling to Bangkok and Boston on business. Doug Hanshaw is now a dad. He's living in Alaska with wife 9 Sanders '86 and working in rational-insight treatment counseling. Nancy Bernhard has her Ph.D. (in American history, I think), is a new mom (hello, daughter Eliza), and lives in Somerville, Mass. I am still with NYNEX in product management, living in Brooklyn, rollerblading a lot, and working on my master list of legendary taverns in N.Y.C.(contributions welcomed). I don't have any kids that I know of. Diana Gordon is married, is a mom, and works for the Justice Department in D.C. I don't think she misses having George Bush for a boss. I saw David Crespo looking dapper at Gritty McDuff's in Portland, Maine. Whatever happened to Mike Predergast? Molly Young? 'Pasteurated' PaulPascarelli? Carole Yunick? Linda Cronin?Ted von Hippel? I keep hoping I can write in about fellow alums with less traditional success stories, such as failed genetic experiment, convicted degenerate, or stripper inresidence, but so far, conformity rules."
Thanks, John. I actually have a lot of requests for news beyond the "who's married and who has kids" list, but I need to get that news from those of you living those unmarried, childless lives. I'll start by saying that I also don't have any kids that I know of. That's at least two of us.
I spoke to Rich Durante at the end of last year right after I sent in the column saying I had left him a message. We caught up for a while (but, as always these days, not nearly long enough). Rich finished graduate school last spring. I think his Ph.D. is in psychology, but if I got it wrong, Rich, you can call and correct me and give me more news on the event mentioned below. He is working with a non profit health organization, Battelle, doing public-health research. He and his wife have been in Chapel Hill, N.C., for four or five years. His wife, Brooke Baker, is an independent consultant, dealing with training and development.
Rick Bayless is a lawyer in San Diego, not married, "still in eating, sleeping, watching sports routine." He just bought a house. GigFaux took off for Hong Kong investment banking.
There was a big bash at the end of last August in New York City. Tim Kidder went east from Los Angeles, where he is in advertising. I'm sure if I called Rich or any other '84 Phi Delt there would be lots of news from that event.
