48 Two issues ago we spoke of plans for the '48 50th Yearbook to be published only three years hence, and of class president JohnHatheway's having found Bob Herrickin La jolla and the Bob Hukes in Hanover/Norwich to take the lead in putting this memorable publication together. We in the class all remain indebted to Jim Randolph,Rollie Sontag, and John VanRaalte as principal developers of the '48 25th Yearbook back in 1973. We assume that, if asked, they will be pleased to offer counsel to enable the H&H team to profit from the former group's experience. Additionally, one can be sure that ideas are sought from each of us by our new team to ensure a successful effort of which each '48 can be proud. (Can you believe it's so soon? Incredible!)
It is appropriate to remind you that Class Agent Marv Axelrod is again shouldering the weighty harness for this year's edition of the Alumni Fund for our alma mater. His hard work isn't fun, fellas, so please help!
Paul Mower is a country lawyer in Chambersburg, Pa. His family lives in the house where he was born, and his bedroom today is where he arrived on this earth. Paul recently told me that he and the late Steve Morrill were close buddies in the V-12 in Hanover and that they received their degrees together in the Bema in 1948. They saw each other only once after that as Steve became an acknowledged expert in railroading. In the late summer of 1993, however, Paul called Steve at the latter's home in Derwent, Md., and they enthusiastically agreed that Steve and his family would drive to Chambersburg and spend a late September weekend with the Mowers. It sounded great. Alas, Steve's death on the 26th of the month was on the planned weekend. Paul says it still hurts.
Bill Malone, longtime attorney in the Mile High Building in Denver, wrote the College some years ago to tell it to cease and desist sending him mail, this due to what seemed to be happening in Hanover at the time. But Bill found this cut him off from news about '48 classmates, and this was not what he wanted. So a few days ago class treasurer Gil Shattuck in Hillsborough in southern N.H. received a welcome phone call from Bill in which the latter reinstated his '48 membership and paid his class dues. Bill also learned that Bob Jeavons lives near him in the Denver suburb of Littleton. Welcome back, Bill!
Tried to contact Dr. Bill Ivins in Huntington, Long Island, where he practiced for many years with the North Shore Medical Group. I was told, however, that Bill and Cathryn have retired to the Carolinas, place unknown. Where are you, Bill?
Dick Greene has moved to Englewood on the west coast of Florida, leaving the beautiful area where he lived in recent years near Mt. Kearsarge in Elkins, N.H. Dick told me something I missed at Reunion last June: JoeHickman had wired Lloyd Krumm that he couldn't make our 45th because Anne was very sick and on oxygen. Joe, best wishes from all of us! We'll see you both at the 50th!
Final note. The College's 179 th Commencement was held in June of our year 1948. As I count it, this year, 1995, will mark Dartmouth's 225 th commencement. Believe it?
