Just when I thought I was the only classmate "up" on Chuck Herberger's esoteric writings on Stonehenge (see '42 class notes in June DAM), along comes Jeff Markell to burst my balloon. He tells me he has sporadically kept in touch with Chuck over the years, swapped books and articles with him, and has read his work on Stonehenge. Jeff continues: "However, I am perhaps one small step ahead of him. I am one of a limited number of people who have been to two Stonehenges. The one on the Salisbury Plain in England is the better known, but I found it to be in a shocking state of disrepair. Just this last March we took a cruise up the Columbia River from Portland, Ore. Not far from the John Day Dam, out in the middle of nowhere, high up on a hill, close to absolutely nothing, an eccentric millionaire has built a copy of Stonehenge which, as the enclosed photo shows, is in excellent condition. I sent a copy of this photo to Dr. Herberger who seemed singularly unimpressed. He is convinced that the 'sacred cut' was probably not used when this Stonehenge was laid out, which, he is certain, indeed bodes Ill.
Forty-two's Oregon contingent—Eric Haessler and John Storrs is slender but professionally potent. Perhaps one of them has visited the American Stonehenge and will weigh in with a third opinion.
Bob Kirk, vacationing with Mary last March in Ponte Vedra Fla., was kind enough to scribble me a note that they enjoyed having dinner there with Gardie and Trish Bridge. He also reminded me that the reason that we haven't seen Huntly and GiniaAllison around the Upper Valley recently is that in late January they embarked an a 100-day floating study program sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh. This reminds me that when I reported Jim and Joyce Idema's move to their new home in Glenn, Mich., I forgot to add that Jim returns every week to Chicago to tutor first-graders in the Cabrini-Green public housing project. He's one of 100 volunteers involved in that program. Jim also reviews books for the Chicago Tribune.
A note from Cappy Rix says the response to his request for tales of wartime experiences from '42 marine veterans has been very good. So far, he has heard from Art Carpenter, BillClark, Hugh Corrigan John Craig, BudHummel, Dick Lawton, Don Meads, Wally Meckes, Merrill McLane, George Rushton, and Jack Zimmer. Cappy and Sally enjoyed cross-country skiing and ice skating last winter at Yosemite.
A good letter from John MOntagne His shoulder operation was successful, and by mid-February he had regained about 80 percent of normal movement. John reports that he, Phoebe, and other family members participated in a "terrific" ceremony in honor of John's mother, who died at nearly 102 earlier this year.
In April Keith and Muriel Prouty sent our nostalgia meter soaring with a postcard of the Foro Romano. They had a "sensational week in Rome, following two action-packed weeks with an Elderhostel course in Greece and the Greek islands."
Many thanks to all of you who took the time to write. Would love to hear from the rest of you.
