From near (Dave Duncan, San Francisco) and far, (Roy and Gabrielle Halstead, Brussels), some 60 classmates, "classymates," and family came together at the Pan Pacific Hotel to participate in '62's 55th Birthday Bash in San Francisco. A good time was had by all, thanks to the splendid efforts of Kent and Joan Hutchinson. The weekend got off to a rousing start with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres hosted by Dave andkathy DeWilde at their magnificent home overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Saturday we pressed to the Fritz Cellars Winery in lovely Sonoma Valley, where '62s participated with gusto in a wine-tasting tour and luncheon hosted by Jay and Barbara Fritz. After mid-afternoon snoozes, visits to Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, and shopping sprees by spouses, we reuned at the Pan Pacific penthouse for cocktails, dinner, keynote (but short!) speeches, and off-key renditions of "Happy Birthday" and our Alma Mater. San Francisco coincidentally obliged with a splendid fireworks display (55 salvos plus one to grow on).
Special thanks to Bob Katz for the design and procurement of the beautiful leather wallets and business-card holders, and to Joan(Mrs. Austin) Eaton, for a display of her magnificent photographs of Dartmouth alongside the Class Notes. Unfortunately, the Katzes and Eatons along with too many others, were unable to attend. However, the class was geographically well represented, with California (not surprisingly) leading the way with 14: Tom and Karen Ackland Sam and Merilee Anderson, Dave and GretchenBergman, Jack and Arienne Ladd, Philand Jan Meyer, Dayton and Margie Misfeldt, Bill and Connie Simos Kent and KateGraham, Larry and Joyce Hazzard Rogerand Liz Usborne Chuck and BarbaraPreuss, Jay and Barbara Fritz, Dave and Kathy DeWilde and Dave Duncan. In all, 15 states were represented, with the majority of '62s (20) coming from states east of the Mississippi, and Texas (Dave Smith, Dick andCarol Harris) was the only other western state represented.
Massachusetts: Dick and Joan Hannah,Ron and Brooke Tagney Rhode Island: Ben and Renee Vogle Connecticut: KentHutchinson, Al Rappaport with Arja and Sabrina New York: Bill and Liz Pierce, Pat and yours truly; New Jersey John and NancyWalters, Josh and Karen Rich; Pennsylvania: Jim and Marnie Haines; Maryland: Sandy and Anne Apgar Georgia: Charlie Balch Virginia: Herbert Morton; Illinois: Jon Will, Bill and Penny Obenshain Ohio: Neil Drobney Minnesota: Paul Johnson,Jim Hale.
I hope that all '62 s have been accounted for, but, honestly, my time was filled with renewing or making new friends while reminiscing about our shared Dartmouth and life experiences.
We truly missed those who were unable to attend, especially Dave Usher, Pat Giles, and Doug McPhail who had to cancel at the last moment. Homecoming: October 20-22. Sixty-two again has the Hopkins Center faculty lounge for Friday night and rooms at the Airport Economy Inn, (800) 433-3466.
As always, we want to hear from you!
