Thanks to GordyWilliamson, who graciously shares classmate letters for ’62’s NEWS, we have personal-news input for this month.
Howard Weinberg is now adjunct professor of television journalism at the Columbia University School of Journalism. He also continues as a freelance producer for “CBS News Sunday Morning.” Professor Weinberg is currently teaching a course in producing a television news magazine to students at the School of International Affairs. Howie reports that “I found my first all-day seminar exhil- arating!”
Andrew Bartlett writes how much he enjoyed our 35di Reunion. Andy recently moved to St. Helena in Napa Valley, Calif., where he is enjoying “good wine and bicy- cling.” (Query: does DWI extend to bicycling?)
Speaking of wine, William Pierce reports that, on a recent flight from Denver to Salt Lake City, United Airlines was serving our own Jay Fritz’s Fritz Cellars Wines. Bill passed up sampling die wine on this flight since it was early morning, but he was rewarded widi the aroma, bouquet, and body of Fritz Cel- lars Wine on the very next day when he flew to San Francisco. Bill’s letter reminds us of the enjoyment we ’62s shared at our 25th Reunion as a result of Jay’s generosity and fine wine-making skills.
Not everyone is moving to California. In fact, Charles Gelman recently moved from the West Coast to Chicago, where he has assumed the position ofvice president of mar- keting for Discovery Zone, the owner/fran- chiser of indoor fun centers. Apparently, Chuck’s good experience as marketing VP for the San Diego Padres influenced him to remain in die fun and entertainment business.
Frederick Roberts, president of the Dart- mouth Club of Houston, reported on the Club’s Second Annual Send-Off Steak Cook- out for the incoming freshmen, their parents, and friends, held at the home of Murray Bow- den ’7l and his wife, Polly. Fred notes the out- standing credentials of members of the class of 1997 from the Houston area. Those of us involved in interviewing for Dartmouth cer- tainly would concur. A recent article titled “Dartmouth Lures First-Class Talent” in the June issue of Dartmouth Life cites statistics which confirm Dartmoudi’s continued suc- cess in attracting outstanding students. The best source of applicants is Dartmouth lega- cies, as evidenced by the fact that “During the last three years, 45 percent of alumni children who applied were' accepted, a rate twice that of general admission.”
Now some news about Gordy Williamson. Gordy recently attended his 35 th Foreman High School class reunion in Chicago. Hav- ing never been back for any prior reunions, Gordy commented, “How much they have changed!” After the Saturday-night bash, Gordy immediately flew back to Hanover for his weekly Sunday morning meeting with the Dartmouth football coaches, for whom he sup- plies all statistical data and analysis. Despite Darmouth’s 1-3 record at this time, the Big Green has consistently outgained its oppo- nents, and the final scores should improve for the rest of the season.
The April 1994 issue of the Alumni Mag- azine will feature “Dartmouth’s Gifts To the World,” so send me your thoughts as to the outstanding inventions, inn ova cions, works of art, books, leadership, etc., or other contri- butions that ’62’s have made to make the world a better place.
