The June 1995 issue of the Valley Business Journal contained an article titled, "Accounting Controls for Small Business," authored by Jay Pierson, in which Jay discusses the misappropriation of corporate funds, the too-often occurrence in small businesses with limited number of employees and overlapping functions. Jay presents certain accounting procedures and checks and balances that can be implemented without major expenses to protect companies. Jay is a partner at Pierson, Grill & Saunders, a Hanover CPA firm.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal reported the announcement by Reebok International Ltd. of the promotion of Paul Duncan to chief operating officer of the Reebok brand division with responsibility for all global operations. News via Gordy Williamson includes a note from Bill Climo, my freshman roomie, of Bill's retirement from MCI after some 33 years. Bill has moved to Colorado, sans his former wife of some 33 years, to join a small software verification company. Bill has apparently jumped head first into the Colorado sports scene, with mountain biking and skiing consuming his recreation hours.
David Shannon also reported to Gordy his new career pattern, still in the law but now operating "parttime" out of his Vermont lakefront/beach office with plenty of time for swimming and fishing. Bellow Falls is not far from Hanover so we expect to see David at '62's fall mini-reunion during Homecoming. Congratulations to Ellis Kern on his appointment to the executive committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York. We assume that Ellie will continue to publish the Green Gazette! Received a warm ("live") note from Edward Falkenberg on his 1995 milestone year. Ed and wife Patricia celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in August as well as completion of 25 years of residence in Scarsdale, N.Y. Their son, Christopher, spent five years with the U.S. Secret Service after graduation from Kenyon College in 1990 and has recently enrolled in the Northwestern University School of Law.
Daughter Merrill, after graduating from Vassal- in 1993, is well into a doctorate program in art history at Stanford University. Pat continues her pursuit of excellence in interior design while Ed continues his financial stewardship at Joseph E. Seagrams & Sons Inc., keeping very busy, especially with certain acquisitions. Despite Ed's time restraints, he faithfully meets weekly for lunch with Bobby Katz. I must find time to accept Ed's kind invitation to get together at the Dartmouth/Yale Club on my next trip to New York City. "Eddie" and I could reminisce on doubledating our "Pattis" while diligently studying at Dartmouth and Tuck.
Lest we forget, it is so good to hear from old friends and classmates with whom we shared so many poignant moments in our past and with whom we wish to share more of our life's experiences. Drop that note or make that phone call today to your old roomie, fraternity brother, sports partner, etc. Your message may be more timely and meaningful than you can imagine.
