It's November now but this column was written during the heat, humidity and dog days of August, when our vacation days were gone. The news of this column on classmates' retirements and promotions remind us that we are always in different stages of our lives as to family and careers.
The Carroll County (Md.) Times reports the retirement on September 30 of Westminster native Jay Moyer as the No. 2 executive of the National Football League. After Dartmouth, Duke Law School, and several years of private practice with the Cleveland firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, in 1972 Jay joined the NFL. Jay's duties rapidly expanded following the departure in 1977 of NFL executive director Jim Kensil. Among Jay's notable accomplishments were his efforts in the passage of the federal Sports Gambling Act of 1992 which bans the spread of legal gambling on sports events. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was quoted in the NFL retirement release, "In all of these roles, Jay's talent, integrity, perfectionist instincts, and loyalty to NFL interests have served the league and its clubs very well." We wish Jay and Terry a most enjoyable retirement.

Our best to Day and Kathie in lovely Iceland.
Steven Roth, at the May 29 groundbreaking ceremony for the Roth Center for Jewish Life, spoke of his gained appreciation and understanding for the meaning of his father's words that, "he always got more pleasure from giving a gift than the recipient got from receiving it." In light of Steve's many gifts to Dartmouth and others over the years, Steve's pleasures hopefully have multiplied one thousandfold. Steve is the principal donor for the $3-million spiritual and cultural center for Jewish students at Dartmouth to be constructed over the next year at 5-7 Occom Ridge, Hanover. The center is named for Steve and his daughter Amanda Roth Salzhauer '93, who cochaired the fundraising campaign. We'62s salute Steve and family for their leadership and generosity.
Again a reminder to calendar 35th Reunion dates June 9-12, 1997, and to pass officer nominations to Gene Gasparro.
