Our Florida snow-bird/President Tom Komarek arrived from his vernal migration north in time to "run/walk" in the 100th Boston Marathon, cheered on by Bill and Patty Sadd. Tom reports that VP Charlie Giersch has agreed to take over leadership of fundraising for our '62 Faculty Fellowship with a worthy/realistic goal to add $200,000 to fully endow this fund. I was most fortunate to break bread with past fellowship winners at this year's 14th annual presentation and reception, hosted by committee members Daniel P.Tompkins and John E. Clark at the Home Hill Restaurant (and highly recommended inn) in Plainfield, N.H. Present also were Gary and Betsy Spiees, JohnSchiffinan, Tom Komarek, and Sandy Apgar, who expands his commitment to teaching excellence by sponsoring his latest faculty incentive award for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Many past honorees with family, as well as Deans Walsh and Berger, joined '62s in saluting this year's honoree, Mark McPeak of the biology department. Mark's award will enable him to travel to Kansas to complete the field work for his project of how species adapt to their environment, a most topical subject given the dramatic environmental changes that we are experiencing.
The '62 fellowship reception culminated a thought-provoking and productive Class Officers Weekend. President Komarek, VP Giersch, treasurer Sadd, and your faithful secretary (every'62 forgot to take me to lunch again this year for Secretary's Day) attended the plenary and specific officer sessions. Tom and I also pinch hit for KentHutchinson at the reunion chairs meeting. As we head into class officer's homestretch to be culminated by our 35th Reunion (Monday to Thursday, June 9-12, 1997) we seek a "few good men" to lead '62 into the next century. Don't be bashful in putting your hat in the ring and/or stick a friend by giving his nomination to Gene Gasbarro. Kent Hutchinson also seeks ideas and workers for his Reunion committee. Calendar these reunion dates and make a commitment today!
Reunions are great because you are there. Also calendar our football minireunions: Homecoming/Dartmouth Night with Yale for October 18, 19 at Airport Inn (Call 1-800-433-3 INN for $95 special '62 rate) and the Harvard mini-reunion at Cambridge Saturday, November 2.
Thanks for lots of communications, much of which must be deferred to next month's column. Bill Pierce sends a May 6 New York Times article reporting the hosting of a Chesapeake and Ohio Canal repair fund party by U.S.Ambassador to Thailand Nitya Pibulsonggram and wife Patricia. Bill reports that they missed the frequent get-togethers with Pat and Nit while he served as Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations. Both Bill and Liz are now enjoying retirement with summers at their Fairlee, Vt., retreat. I must also pass on the joy and pride that Bill and Liz experienced in seeing the graduation of their children's governess. My neighbors similarly had this wonderful experience, which reflects the love and support that families give to their domestic caregivers.
