The Holiday Season is a time to celebrate miracles, family, and friends, even life itself. Thus, it gives me great joy to announce the birth of Colin James Johnson, born June 29 in Boston to Larry and Renita Johnson. When I saw Larry at Reunion, he let me know there was a child on the way. I kept meaning to call him to find out whether the baby was a boy or a girl, but he beat me to it by sending me a birth announcement. The Johnsons also have another son, four-year-old Philip. They live in Andover, Mass. Larry is an orthopedic surgeon in private practice with three partners in Lowell. Renita, a 1980 graduate of Boston College, was previously a social worker and is now a falltime mom. Larry graduated from Columbia Physicians & Surgeons Medical School in 1979, completed orthopedic training at Tufts in 1986, and then spent a year in Birmingham, Ala., doing a spine-surgery fellowship. Larry started practice in 1986 and married Renita in 1987. He tells me he spends his time raising his family, and swimming, biking, skiing, hiking, and playing tennis, so as not to leave too much time for work! A final quote from Larry: "Please tell Walt Evans and Bob Dray that they are on the wanted list for our next reunion."
Gary Lafayette wrote with wonderful news of various successes realized by African-American lawyers who are Dartmouth '75s. In July Jerry Lovejoy became vice president and general counsel for Baskin Robbins Inc. Jerry will be responsible for all legal affairs for the world-famous ice cream producer. Gary's own accomplishments include several successful entrepreneurial ventures. He formed and built one of the largest minority-owned law firms in the country: McGee, Lafayette, Willis & Greene. Earlier this year Gary left the firm with two partners to start his own new firm in San Francisco: Lafayette, Kumagai and Clarke, which will focus on litigation in labor and employment, products liability, toxic torts, and insurance defense. The new firm's clients include Eastman-Kodak, Procter & Gamble, Taco Bell, the San Francisco Housing Authority, East Bay Municipal Utilities District, and Contra Costa County. Gary feels the mix of corporate and government clients gives the firm an opportunity to give something back to the community. In addition, the firm is committed to alternative dispute resolution and early assessment of litigation costs. Gary earned his J.D. in 1979 from U.C. Berkeley's BoaltHall. Congratulations, Jerry and Gary!
Paul Winslow sent in the following note about his amazing new invention. "I'm not sure how it all got started, but I have created and just published a game called Quote Unquote. So, the world now has Winslow Games as well as Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers. The game involves identifying famous people based on humorous and revealing quotes by and about these people. The entire first printing of the game was sold (during my first marketing call) to department stores in D.C. and Philadelphia. And Games magazine has chosen QuoteUnquote to be included in the Games 100, the magazine's special of reviews and awards for the best new games. Apparently my game is in the running for the best-trivia-game award; although, in the words of one of the magazine's senior editors, it is 'more than just a trivia game.'"
I wish you a holiday season filled with joy, peace, and love.
