I probably should send Laura Gasser some type of prize she is the first '87 to e-mail me with news for this column. And good news it is! Laura has recently become engaged to Marc Katz, whom some of you may have met at our reunion. To his credit, Marc survived that initiation weekend, and fortunately passed the inspection of Laura's Dartmouth friends. He popped the question during a romantic dinner in Manhattan in August, and then (after Laura said yes) whisked her away for a surprise week in the Bahamas to celebrate. Laura is currently an attorney in D.C., but she and Marc plan to relocate to San Francisco during the coming year. Congratulations, Laura! Sadly, that's the only "new" news I have for you this month. In trying to come up with a somewhat respectable column anyway, despite the information drought, I realized that I tend to bump into quite a few '87s right here in Hanover. Some work for Dartmouth, some don't, but I thought I'd give you the lowdown on who's still in town. If you ever get up to Hanover for a visit, here are some familiar faces you just might see:
At Dartmouth, we have three '87 women in the athletic department coaching varsity teams (that has to be some kind of a record.) Ellen O'Neil is the women's cross-country coach, Chris Schutz Brownell coaches men's and women's varsity squash, and Laurie Lopes is an assistant coach for the women's basketball team. As a faithful season-ticket-holder, I can report that Laurie's team has had several terrific seasons in a row, including the 1995 Ivy League championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament where they narrowly lost to Virginia in the first round.
Eric Bivona is a senior computer programmer working for Dartmouth's library system. Meg Houston is also working for the College in the music library. Tom Kannam is an associate in Dartmouth's investments office, helping to manage the College's Si-billion endowment. Tom is married to Heather McCutchen, and they have recently built a home in Hanover, where they live with their two daughters and where Heather also has a thriving business as a freelance writer. Gerry Russo is an instructor in the French and Italian department. And finally, I have recently changed jobs and joined the Thayer School of Engineering as the director of annual giving and alumni relations.
Not everyone here in the Upper Valley works for the College, of course. Beth Paap Armstrong used to be with Dartmouth admissions, but she now works down the road at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden. Moira Teevens Nobili is coaching track at Hanover High School. Roseanne Wood is also in the area, working as an accountant at a painting business. Bill Heston is a glassblower for Simon Pearce Glass. Doug Green has spent the past few years in the radiology department at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Louis Crosier and Cynthia Raizes Kacoyanis are both beginning their second year at Tuck, and Rob Mazzarese has just recently returned to Hanover to pursue his M.S. at Thayer.
I'm sure I've left some people out, but this list was all I could scrounge up with my limited resources. If others of you are in the area, I'd love to hear from you! And, I'm counting on the rest of you to write to me soon to bring some sorely-needed geographical diversity to this column.
I hope all of you enjoy a wonderful holiday season!
