Greetings. Please excuse any bad grammar or dull deliveries. I write this in a fog during the third of three relatively sleepless post-partum weeks. Yes, my husband Alex and I are the proud parents of James ("Jamie") Guthrie Tanford, born November 12, 1995. His 15-month-old sister has not yet tried to kill him so we feel blessed.

In a similar vein, Bill Ragan and wife Betsy had their second child, Sarah Elizabeth, on July 28, 1995. Their first, Jim, is two. Bill is finishing his master's in divinity at And over Newton Theological Seminary, with an eye toward ordained ministry, and has been primary caregiver while Betsy, returned to full-time work in acquisitions at the And over Newton Library. They reported that they love parenthood. This last bit was obviously written after their second child started sleeping through the night.

Once again, Bobby Charles warrants mention here for his Washington exploits. Bobby is now chief of staff and chief counsel to the House Subcommittee on National Security, International Affairs, and Criminal Justice. He and Marina, a lawyer specializ- ing in U.S.-Russian law, also love parenthood. What is this, a disease?

Now I owe a plug to Tom Burack for the Dartmouth Environmental Network (DEN). DEN is an organization which holds symposia and coordinates activities designed to raise environmental awareness and "help Dartmouth become a more environmentally sustainable institution." If you are interested in joining, call Tom at (603) 627-8122.

Scott Simmons sent a very nice letter from his office at Cazenove Inc., which appears to be a stock brokerage house. He himself appears to be a vice president, although he crossed the title out under his signature, I assume in order to downplay formalities and not because he was recently terminated. Scott reported: "Excellent time with multiple Phis and their better halfs on a random summer weekend in Philadelphia arranged and catered by Ralph McDevitt. In attendance—distancec man Mark Soane, country squires Stanand Sue Kraska, dashing John andCourtney Froemming, Shakespeare scholars Andy and Kendall Gaillard, soon-to-be-wed Bob McNeil, master of the universe Steve Lichtenauer, Johnnie"Cochran" Utzschneider, supposedly Steve Schuh, and the lovable(?) and übiquitous Ralph and Tink McDevitt. Thanks Ralph and everyone. Good memories—Stephanie (my wife) and I have been singing Eben Jones's pledge name ever since." Scott also asked, "How is life in Indiana? I imagine it being peaceful, pleasant, pastoral, and generally pretty damn nice! What do you do [there]?" Well, Scott, yes, it is relatively homespun here, except for blips like the Tyson trial, the Indy 500, and occasional incidents of student violence and unrest. As for what I do in all this pastoralness—it depends. Today, for example, I spent several hours contemplating my chances of avoiding arrest if I were to tape a binky in my son's mouth.

Finally, Jason Klein wrote to say that he and wife Robin had their second child, Jill, in November 1994. Their son, Michael, is four. The Kleins recently moved from New York City to CHAP paqua, and Jason left McKinsey & Co.'s media and consumer goods practice to join Times Mirror Magazines as senior vice president of The Outdoor Cos., which publishes Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines. In a tidbit of particular titillation to a People hound like me, an enclosed press release noted that Jason will report to Efrem Zimbalist III. How disgusting. Not only does Jason now have an incredibly lofty-sounding title and job, but he may have opportunities to hobnob with unusually cultivated Hollywood types. I'll just have to be satisfied with random John Mellen camp sightings.
