5ifty Joe sent me a comic strip with the following dialogue: "Editor: 'This column really stinks.' Pause. 'Well, don't you have anything to say?' Scribe: 'l'm at a loss for words.' Editor: 'Well, that's a start.'" Meddle not, Medlicott!
Dick and Sam Dale were very welcome additions to this year's February minireunion in Hanover, joining about 35 (including wives) of us old standbys. Dick's retired from C.R. Bard Inc., and they live in Barrington, R.I. They hit the slopes as often as possible and have a ski house at Mad River. On the Saturday morning of the mini-reunion weekend, the class executive committee held its usual winter meeting. With Bill Carpenter presiding, 16 members met to discuss the business of the class. Following the report of treasurer FizzNichols, the committee voted unanimously to increase the annual dues from the current $35 to $55. Most of the increase is earmarked for our 50th Reunion, only four years away, and especially for the 50th yearbook. Mini chairmen Len Matless and Dave Taylor reported on the weekend's events and announced that the fall minireunion would be on October 18-20, when Yale plays in Hanover. The Saturday evening get-together will be at Dowd's Country Inn in Lyme.
Bob Kilmarx reported on the Alumni Fund. As reported here a couple of issues ago, we exceeded our class goal last year, and Bob says that we are well on the way toward our goal of $175,000 for this year. If you're on the fence about giving, please think seriously about joining the 305 of us who gave at least something last year. Bob and Jacques Harlow also discussed our 50th Reunion gift, and reported that there is considerable interest among many of you in the proposed insurance program. The widow's program seems to be going well. Betsy Pinkham has mailed a survey to the 62 widows and the return shows that more than two-thirds want to keep up their contact with the class.
Newc Eldridge reported on the tree program. It seems that we have provided for the planting of all the trees that are called for in the College's master landscaping plan. The job now is to maintain them, replace as required, and pass on this rewarding project to the class of 2000.
Another class project, the athletic endowment program, is worthy of your attention. This is one which augments the regular budgets of the various athletic departments, especially providing for the expenses of bringing promising highschool athletes to Hanover to visit the College. About 25 classmates are participating so far, and we can use a lot more.
The executive committee meeting closed with the president reiterating our specific goals for the rest of the year: bringing back "disenchanted" classmates, winnowing the Alumni Magazine recipients, increasing class unity and participation, supporting younger classes, and raising the percentage of class dues-payers. Hope you're enjoying spring. Finally!
