The Retired Officer Magazine recently ran a story about the 60th anniversary of the Sun Valley Lodge, noting that it hosted Hollywood regulars even during WW II, when the resort belonged to the navy. With the article was a reprint of a well-known photo (you may recall it) showing Jack Hemingway, highlighted by his 1945 sweater, with Mrs. Gary Cooper on his right, and Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper, and Clark Gable on his left, all with great smiles and ready for a downhill run.
Carolyn Manning (widow of Jim)Drumm sent current news to Frank andDora Aldrich. She is still running her busy Manila travel agency, which she "hopes to sell this year and then have fun." Meantime she finds time and energy to be president of Republicans Abroad and to chair the George Washington Ball at the Philippines U.S. Embassy.
Sounds like fun already, though of a demanding nature indeed. The Upper Valley lunch bunch enjoyed having Jim with us in the '80s while he was living in New Hampshire. He remarried Carolyn, his wife of the '40s, in 1991 and moved to Manila with her. They enjoyed extensive travels in Asia and Latin America before Jim died in 1992. Carolyn's address: Urdaneta Apt. #1A, 6735 Ayala Ave Makati, N.M. 1226, Philippines.
Retired Brown Professor Elliott and wife Norma Goodman were in Southern California and hosted by retired Col. Myles Raymond O'Crowley and wife Bertha at their home in Dana Point. They all checked out Nixon country around San Clemente and the art scene in Laguna Beach, winding up (if I read Ray right) at an Amish crafts fair at the Del Mar Race Track. That has to take the prize for cross-country cultural contrast!
Dick Murray reports that he and Helen had a wonderful visit in Tucson from Rodand Cindy Walser, out from Hagerstown. Dick and Rod were post-WW II roommates. It's 1996; do you know where YOUR roommate is? Make that call!
Bud Elder and Harry Hampton are busy planning their 55th Reunion at Evanston Township High School, where they were good buddies for three years before Harry shifted to Mamaroneck.
Nick and Mary Sandoe were back at their favorite southern spot, Jekyll Island, Ga, this time for an Elderhostel. Ruth and I, no doubt like some of you, are becoming Elderhostel junkies. Best bargain getaway there is, with stress-free mind stimulation too.
