It's a unique pleasure to report a recent Upper Valley marriage and to welcome a new wife into Dartmouth '45. Bob Pease and Mary Masland were married this spring. Mary is the daughter of Max Norton, who was bursar of the College in our time on campus. Mary is also a cousin of our classmate Howie Sawyer. Best wishes to Mary and Bob. We look forward to seeing them together at many '45 events and reunions to come.
Dick and Mary Kendall and son Tom '72 now have a special reason to visit Hanover regularly. Daughter Mary '78 is the wife of Scott Brown '78, the new dean of the Tucker Foundation. Another reason for their February visit was to continue a Kendall family tradition of timing Winter Carnival ski races.
A wondrously inspirational service celebrating the life of Don Cutter was held in a field of the sightly Cutter Farm in Lyme Center. There were close to 200 of Don's admirers there, representing first themselves and also the 10th Mountain Division, the sport of skiing, the National Pork Producers, the College, Hanover/Lyme towns, and the class of '45. I counted 14 classmates present. Rosalie and her family did a superb job of arranging an opportunity for us all to remember and appreciate Don, our friendships, and his accomplishments. Solace for Rosalie too, we hope.
Gene Wilkin has set up a Web site to accelerate his diocese public relations activity (Arizona to Alaska) and is using the 'Net to get material for his local church newsletter. Gene is not inexperienced at newsletters; he did '45's for 11 years in the sixties and seventies. Gene is senior warden of his church. Anita is taking final exams for her Washington (state) realtor license.
John Buttler, stimulated by Gene, thoughtfully updated his bio in the 50th yearbook. After 27 years of law practice in Portland and 15 years on the Oregon Court of Appeals, John is still serving as judge pro tempore and acting as an arbitrator, mediator, and consultant. He finds a little more time for flyfishing, woodworking, and gardening; hopes to get back to his darkroom soon.
Two active '45 retailers are both well and enjoying busy schedules. Sumner Dorftnan and Barbara are still operating Boston's finest jewelry store on Newbury Street, across from the Ritz Carlton. Sum takes care of an elite clientele, including of course many Dartmouths. Murray (John) and Delores Smart exchanged Maine snow for Florida sun back in '82. Delores and daughter Kimberly started a furniture store in Spring Hill (west of Ocala). Murray pitches in during busy times but takes off for golf when allowed. (Ex-hockey-players generally make good golfers.) He's hoping to shoot his age sometime soon. Should get easier each year, Murray.
Finally, '45 out for the fall mini October 3-4-5, with warm weather and peak foliage. Brisk class meeting on Saturday morning, to make the noon kickoff with Cornell. The game is on TV somewhere. Yon regulars know how enjoyable these minis are. You who haven't made one lately (or ever), join in responding positively to the details in George Barr's newsletter. You'll be glad you did.
