I got it wrong. In the May issue Trygve Myhren did not sell off the cable television operations of the Providence Journal Bulletin. Quite the contrary, he expanded its cable and broadcast business as well as successfully entering the programming and multimedia businesses. Prior to moving to Providence, he served as chairman and CEO of American Television and Communications (now Time Warner Cable). During his five plus years with the Providence Journal Cos. its stock increased fourfold. I did get it right that he has retired. This past summer, he and Vicki got to enjoy their home on Narragansett Bay without the interruption of trips to Providence. In retirement, he will continue to serve on six corporate boards in addition to playing a major role in Lifespan, an academically based, non-profit health service serving southeast New England.
While talking with Trygve he mentioned another retiree in our class, JoelPortugal. When asked how retirement seemed to him, Joel responded that the major difference could be easily summed up in just one sentence. When you get up each morning, you need to remind yourself not to get a hair cut and your shoes shined on same day.
Learned of the retirement of yet another classmate, Chuck Neff. His wife, Mary, wrote to say that after 36 years in public accounting with Ernst and Young as an audit partner, Chuck had retired a year ago this September.
Retirement was the occasion to sell their home in Richmond, Va., and move to the Chesapeake Bay area off the shores of Virginia. Their four children have made them the proud parents of four grandchildren. There's an idea for another panel at our 40th Reunion: "The joys and challenges of being a grandparent" or "How to remain solvent as a grandparent."
Be sure to circle the dates, make your reservations now (if you have not already), and get packed for a trip to Hanover Plain October 18-20. In addition to Dartmouth Night and the Yale football game, there will be many class activities organized by Joe Jacquet throughout the weekend. We have had new faces turning up these past several years. How about adding to the fan by joining your classmates and wives this year?
No, Bill Hartley has not left the ranks of the class of '58. Still not sure how he made the notes of the class of '55 in May issue of the alumni magazine. JohnMurphy is worried that a recent dinner he had with Bill in New York or the time he put a picture of Bill getting in the car in the rain to escape going to a football game on Homecoming weekend which he put in our class newsletter might have caused Bill to bolt our ranks. Closer research has revealed that such is not the case, Murph. Breath easy now, big fella.
