From Syracuse, N.Y., comes the news that JoelPotash has been named the 1994 recipient of the Sister Patricia Ann Award for Excellence at the St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. Commenting upon this honor, Joel stated, "The Sister Patricia Ann Award was particularly important to me because I've been a member of the St. Joseph's family for so long, over 30 years since I started my residency. I sort of grew up with Sister Patricia Ann when she was administrator. I really believe in the philosophy of St. Joseph's Hospital, which is really to care for all people, regardless of their economics or belief system." It is also worth noting that Joel is the physician for the Onondaga Nation.

Not only is Bill Allyn keeping busy as the president of Welch Allyn Inc., manufacturers of medical diagnostic and high-tech instruments, but Bill has just been named to the examining committee of policy owners of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co Each year Northwestern appoints five policy owners to take an impartial look at company operations. There is no dust gathering under the feet of Carl McCall. In November he was elected comptroller for the state of New York. Speaking in one of his TV campaign ads, Carl recalled the values his mother had given him as he grew up: "I was taught to be accountable. Government should be, too." In a review of this ad, The New York Times commented, "Mr. McCall establishes himself as a selfmade man with strong values." With the many financial pressures facing the state of New York, it appears the citizens of that state have elected the right man as comptroller.

As this issue reaches you, John Trimble's work as our Alumni Fund head agent will be in high gear. If you have not already made your gift to the fund, take a minute right now to do it. The need for excellence in higher education has never been greater, and our alma mater continues that excellence even some 37 years after the class of 1958 marched down the library lawn and began our roaming 'round the "girdled earth."
