Carrying on the Dartmouth tradition of concern for the plight of Native Americans is JohnVan Dyke. John, who is president of Dakota Water Systems in Silicon Valley along with two members of the class of 1989, is attacking a serious problem. The Lakota Sioux of Pine Ridge, S.D., are located in the poorest county in the nation and now have a homelessness rate of 29 percent. John is involved in securing excess government housing on closed military bases to bring to the reservation and is locating computers for the reservation schools. Anyone interested in more information can reach John at 1-800-500-0426. A '67 involved in a different kind of community service is Joe Carleton. Joe was reelected as a Maine State representative on the Republican ticket. He expects to use his business expertise to work on economic issues affecting growth in the state.

In a recent interview in The N.Y. Times, Fred Price discussed the research that Applied Microbiology, where Fred is CEO, is doing. They have just been awarded two patents on a protein, nisin, that Fred believes will kill bacteria without allowing them to build up resistance to it, solving the very serious problem of antibiotics that are rapidly losing their effectiveness. Also recognized recently for the quality of his research was Robert Dalrymple. Bob was named the Edward C. Davis Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware as a result of his work on wave mechanics and coastal and ocean engineering. Bob has been a member of the U.D. faculty since 1973. Also continuing to use their research skills in applied fields are Ralphand LauraStaley. Both of their labs at DuPont are now working on paints, with Ralph focusing on the structure of pigment distributions. It sounds as if this, plus their three daughters of 5, 7, and 10, keep them very busy.
