Following our mention of Ma Smalley in our March column on notable Hanover ladies, D. B. Voorhees, a devotee of Ma Rood, chided us for what he took to be a slight of this estimable lady and her establishment. He pointed out that the following '33s worked there: Hobbs, Farrand, C. Clark, Legrow, Field, Hackett, Tallberg, Watson, Almy, and himself. Eight professors, 30 students, 12 women from College offices, and, later, the Blaik assistant coaches, ate there. Mrs. Rood was a "stately, nononsense person" and to D.B. "knowing her was part of the special Dartmouth experience we fondly recollect as time goes by." Merrill McLane '42 also wrote a delightfully nostalgic note in which he praised Mrs. Rood's devotion to her student patrons and pointed out that Nelson Rockefeller ate at the club on the back porch section where meals were 50 cents less.

PHEW! May we say in response that we were well acquainted with the Rood Club and its proprietress, the excellence of its cuisine and the noble character of its patrons. Nothing less than superiority could characterize a club of which Wes Beattie was manager and, a bit later, Tom Monagan '36 one of its functionaries.

Georgetown U's recent acquisition of books collected by Herb West brought to light one of the weekly "Literary Horizons" columns of the late professor Burton Martin, then of Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, in which he painted a charming picture of Herb in the Baker Tower Room giving a fire-lit talk on his reading and book collecting.

St. Jude in the communion of the sanctified is the patron of "lost causes" and we think that Bob "M" Cox should have recourse to him since Bob informs us that he has been campaigning for the reauthorization of the Indian symbol. However much we agree with Bob's objective, and wish him well, reality dictates a judgment that except for stimulating the circulation of his blood, his effort gives little hope for a favorable nod from Parkhurst.

Don't forget that October 4th has been set as the date for the 1933 mini-reunion. It's the Cornell game weekend.
