Our own Gary Rubus has been much in the press lately. Now Brigadier General Rubus, Gary has been named commanding officer of Tyndall Air Force Base. He has had a distinguished career in the Air Force that started with combat experience in Viet Nam. He has numerous decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Purple Heart, and a Silver Star. Gary is currendy the deputy director for international negotiations for the joint staff in Washington, a post he took after service as air attache to the Soviet Union and defense attache to the Russian Federation. What an impressive set of credentials. In another major appointment, Governor Shaheen has named John Lewis as chairman of the New Hampshire Board of Education. An attorney from Durham, John is a former teacher and former member of his local school board with longstanding interest in issues of educational policy. I suspect Cindy and the three kids won't be seeing too much of John for awhile if New Hampshire school politics is similar to here.
Recognized in a different way is Bob Dalrymple, whose research has again won a major award. Founder and director of the University of Delaware Center for Applied Coastal Research, Bob works on wave mechanics and sediment transport and their applications to coastal and harbor engineering. He recently received the prestigious Moffatt-Nichol Engineering Award for his "pioneering research contributions" to the field.
From the California press came a profile of Tom Jackson, who for the past seven years has managed Prudential's very successful Blue Chip Equity Fund. Tom began by managing money for Chase Manhattan and Dreyfus before coming to this position. His strict criteria for value investing have proven very profitable for his investors.
