The ice storm in the Northeast did little harm in Hanover but devastated nearby communities and left many without electricity for a week. One friend, with teary eyes, commented after losing many of their big trees, "In our lifetime our younger trees won't replace our mighty ones, and nature has dealt the area a heavy blow." Doubdess you read and heard about it, and like us admired the spirit of people helping people.

Frances Dudley had a heart attack and angioplasty operation in December. She spent some time at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital and the Care Unit at Kendal. Her recovery is steady, with care. Both she and Charlie drive their electric carts around at Kendal.

Esther Nighswander is recovering from a knee operation.

Dick and Katie Black moved from Kendal to Harvest Hill in Lebanon where Petie Foster also lives. The place has the looks and feel of a New England inn, and they are all very happy there.

The bookcase in the new lobby at the Hanover Inn has an incomplete shelf of copies of the Aegis (and other class books). They need one for '29, so don't throw any out. Please send them to me, and I will pass them on.

A lovely letter from Al Dowxiing's daughter Susan tells of his death from cancer and his beautiful Hospice care. His farm and Dartmouth were the most meaningful aspects of his life. He is remembered as a loyal '29er.

Bob Fairchild, M.D., wrote about his Dartmouth roommate Al Welch, who died in October at his home in Evanston, I11. They had continued to keep in touch over the years.

The College has notified us of the death of these widows: Mrs. F. William Andres, Mrs. Paul A. Babcock Jr., Mrs. Herbert M. Fish, Mrs. Phillip H. Gage, Mrs. Charles A. Jackson, Mrs. Laflin C. Jones, Mrs. Mervin G. Pallister. We send heartfelt sympathy to their families—and Rip adds, "Hold fast to hope, when sadness haunts your years, For hope, with faith and love, will conquer fear."
