We are indebted to John M. Ryan '58 for the following: The 1997 Connie Award was presented to longtime maritime industryveteran Manuel "Mike" Diaz by the Containerization and Intermodal Institute at a luncheon in New Yorkin December of lastyear attended by over 300 representatives of the maritime, rail, port, terminal, labor, and government sectors of the transportation industry. Mike retired last September as U.S. owner's representative for DSR-Senator Line. He was responsible for introducing container operations in both the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean shipping lanes during his career. In the words of the C&II committee member who presented the award: "With more than a half-century of dedication to our industry and our nation, Mike Diaz is a standout recipient of this award. There are few, if any, in our industry who can claim so many initiatives over the past 50 years." Wah-hoo-wah, Mike!

Margaret M. Leavitt has died. The wife of our classmate and newsletter editor, Howie Leavitt, succumbed after a long and difficult fight against congestive heart failure. A graduate of Smith College, drama director, editor, author, teacher, mother of four sons, and grandmother of six, Margie was unfailingly kind, generous, and cheerful. We shall miss her, and we extend our sympathy to Howie. We have learned of the death of Russ Sherburne in Florida. He had been in a nursing home for several years. We offer our condolences to his family.
