43 Jim Gilbert writes that he has retired as chairman of the South Central Connecticut Regional Authority, which provides fresh water to some 500,000 households in the area. I imagine this must be at least a second retirement, for which we offer congratulations. Yes, this is the same jim who walks the Nepalese mountains in search of the elusive snow leopard, and—talk about living life on the line—kicks turtles in the Galapagos Islands.
Red Krumm writes (via Howie Leavitt) to note the 50th anniversary of the assault on Riva Ridge, at the base of the Apennines, in February 1945 by his unit, the First Battalion, 86th Mountain Regiment, of the elite 10th Mountain Division. Bob Field sent to Red an extremely well-researched article from the Valley News detailing the critical importance of the engagement to the success of the Italian campaign. Some of us were half a world away at the time and had little news or understanding of what was taking place elsewhere.
We have learned of the death last December of Jeffrey Bartlett Geer, the wife of PeteGeer. Mrs. Geer was the great-granddaughter of Samuel Colcord Bartlett, the eighth president of Dartmouth College. We offer our condolences to Pete and his family.
Cal Osberg has informed us of the death of Ken Sorlien at Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, N.H., on February 12.
